As a dedicated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fan, I’m always thrilled to learn about new directors joining this expansive universe of interconnected stories. Shawn Levy, with his impressive filmography, has recently added his name to that list with the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The rumors surrounding his potential involvement in the upcoming Avengers project had me on the edge of my seat!
People who have followed the Marvel movies from the beginning are aware that a multitude of directors have contributed to the intricately connected film universe. The most recent addition to this list is Shawn Levy, who took charge as director for the highly anticipated “Deadpool & Wolverine” project. There were rumors last month that Marvel Studios valued his work, with reports suggesting he was a potential choice for Avengers 5. However, this wasn’t officially verified. Now, Levy himself is shedding some light on whether he intends to continue working in the superhero genre.
What Did Shawn Levy Say About The Marvel Rumors That Swirled Around Him?
During June, I heard whispers that the director of “Cheaper by the Dozen” was in talks to lead the fifth Avengers movie, originally titled “The Kang Dynasty.” Yet, there was a catch – this filmmaker wasn’t entirely committed and Marvel Studios was exploring options with other directors due to his uncertainty. While strolling the red carpet at the “Deadpool & Wolverine” premiere, I was asked about these persistent rumors. With a thoughtful tone, I expressed my belief that things weren’t set in stone just yet.
Based on my extensive experience as a dedicated filmmaker who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of Marvel movies, I can confidently affirm that I have read more than my fair share of reports related to this dynamic and successful franchise. My recent focus, however, has been solely on creating an enthralling new addition to this cinematic universe. This intense creative process has been nothing short of rewarding for me, and it seems Marvel shares the same sentiment. Therefore, I wouldn’t be shocked if our professional journey together continues beyond this project.
Based on my understanding of the interview given by the Canadian director to Entertainment Weekly (EW), it seems that he hasn’t made a definitive decision about directing another Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film just yet. He didn’t completely rule out the possibility, but also didn’t confirm it with a definite “yes.”
According to various reports, Shawn Levy had a great experience collaborating with Kevin Feige and Marvel’s top executives, and the feeling was mutual. Moreover, early responses to “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” featuring Levy’s direction have been favorable. With Marvel’s past successes under the guidance of directors like James Gunn, Joe and Anthony Russo, and Ryan Coogler, it seems wise for Feige and his team to consider keeping Levy as part of their talented roster. In my opinion, Levy has the potential to helm various future MCU projects, including “Avengers 5,” regardless of its current challenges.
How Much Is Known About Avengers 5’s Development At This Point?
At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige made an official announcement about Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Following this announcement, the production of the superhero team-up film encountered some challenges. Initially, it was reported that Destin Daniel Cretton from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings would direct the movie. By September 2023, Jeff Loveness who wrote Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, was assigned to write the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, in November 2023, Cretton stepped down from directing and Loveness was no longer involved in writing the script.
In November 2023, Michael Waldron, the writer of Loki, was appointed for the Avengers: Disassembly (working title of Avengers 5) production. However, by July 2024, Waldron supposedly left the project, causing another obstacle for Avengers: Disassembly. That very month, rumors emerged that the Russo Brothers would helm both Avengers: Disassembly and the sixth movie in the franchise. This hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, but it might be announced at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2024 happening this month.
Shawn Levy may not be chosen to direct a film featuring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but the possibility of him helming another Marvel Cinematic Universe project, be it a movie or a TV show, is plausible. However, given his current commitments, Marvel would need to accommodate his schedule. Among his upcoming projects is an update on the “Star Wars” film he’s set to direct. Only time will tell if Levy will take on another superhero-focused project in the future.
In July 2024, you can witness the filmmaker’s initial contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe by watching “Deadpool & Wolverine” – a highly anticipated movie – in theaters on the 26th.
