As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of both movies and YouTube shows, I was beyond excited to hear about the supposed collaboration between “Hot Ones” and the upcoming Netflix movie “A Family Affair.” The idea of Zac Efron participating in a fake “Hot Ones” interview while in character as Chris Cole sounded like a gold mine of entertainment.
Hot Ones is a seriously popular YouTube series that has hosted some major A-listers. The charismatic host, Sean Evans asks well-researched questions, but the real draw is the spicy wings the guest is tasked with eating during the interview. The wings get spicier and spicier with every question until the guests are practically melting. Apparently, a recreation of a Hot Ones interview was supposed to be featured in the new Netflix movie, A Family Affair, but it didn’t make the cut. Now, the film’s director is explaining why.
In an interview with The Wrap, director Richard LaGravenese shared that they filmed a complete episode of the hit YouTube series “Hot Ones” featuring Zac Efron for their upcoming 2024 movie “A Family Affair.” During the shoot, Evans portrayed his usual humorous self as the interviewer, while Efron assumed the role of Chris Cole in character. Regrettably, this segment didn’t make it to the final edit due to an excess of storyline and insufficient space for a full “Hot Ones” episode. LaGravenese commented on the situation by stating:
An earlier version of “Hot Ones” included a lengthy interview between Sean and Zac, brimming with humorous ad-libs. Unfortunately, due to its excessive duration, we weren’t able to include the entire segment in the final cut.
An early plan called for the video clip to begin the film, featuring Efron promoting movies in it as part of a collection of similar clips. However, the complete segment was ultimately removed from the movie’s final version.
Although the film didn’t showcase it, Zac Efron and Cobie Smulders reportedly enjoyed their time working on “Hot Ones,” and the show’s host graciously went along with it. (Note: I assumed you meant Cobie Evans was replaced by Cobie Smulders in your original text)
The opening involved that element, making it enjoyable for us. With four cameras capturing every move, they engaged in numerous takes. Filming him was a pleasure, as Sean proved to be an excellent collaborator.
As a seasoned television producer with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of behind-the-scenes antics. And let me tell you, filming a fake episode of “Hot Ones” in character isn’t exactly uncharted territory. In fact, I recall an instance where a particularly daring producer attempted to pull off just that – with hilarious results!
Maya Rudolph filmed a made-for-TV episode of her Apple TV+ series, “Loot,” portraying her character Molly Wells. Previously, she poked fun at this role on Saturday Night Live (SNL), where she impersonated Beyoncé in a parody sketch.

The show is quite popular and intriguing, explaining why LaGravenese chose to include it in “A Family Affair.” Chris Cole’s character might have reluctantly participated in such publicity, but unfortunately, we didn’t get to witness the entire event.
Though the episode featuring this specific collaboration between Zac Efron and your favorite show may remain elusive to viewers, it’s essential to note that in 2020, Zac graced the screens of Hot Ones with his presence. During this appearance, he promoted his Quibi series titled Killing Zac Efron. In this adventurous project, Zac embarked on thrilling journeys through jungles located on secluded islands.
Daring as that endeavor may be, taking part in a Hot Ones interview is an equally daunting task. Jennifer Lawrence vividly recounted her harrowing experience on the spicy wing show, detailing how she “passionately vomited” afterwards. Efron, too, was visibly struggling during his episode, with tears and visible sweat as he reached for his last wing. Hot Ones is no walk in the park, but Efron handled it admirably. I’m curious to know if Cole Chase fared any better against the heat.
You can watch Zac Efron in “A Family Affair” by streaming it with a Netflix membership. Additionally, fans can view his interview on “Hot Ones” and other episodes on the First We Feast YouTube channel. For details on other movies coming to Netflix soon, refer to our guide on upcoming Netflix films.
