Disneyland Appears To Have Avoided A Strike For Now, But It’s Not Quite Over Yet

As a long-time Disneyland Resort fan and annual passholder, I’ve experienced the magic of these parks countless times. But this summer season has been particularly challenging, with a significant portion of Disneyland Park closed and overcrowding making every visit less enjoyable. The potential strike by 13,000 cast members added an extra layer of uncertainty to the situation.

I’ve been following the news about Disneyland Resort’s summer season in 2024 with a heavy heart. As a long-time annual passholder and avid theme park enthusiast, the thought of missing out on my favorite attractions is disheartening enough. But what’s even more concerning is the significant impact this has had on the resort and its cast members.

Last week, Disneyland’s Master Services Council, comprised of different roles from ride operators to cashiers to culinary creators, had the green light to go on strike following three months of contract negotiations without success. The looming threat of a work stoppage seemed to expedite matters as a preliminary deal was reached within two days of talks. In a Twitter update, the council announced…

Through dedication and hard work, we successfully negotiated a three-year agreement with substantial salary raises for every cast member, advancement in seniority, extra compensation, and the preservation of existing bonuses. Furthermore, we resolved matters to improve the effectiveness of our attendance policy for the benefit of our team members.

The strike threat has been temporarily shelved as the union holds a vote on July 29th to approve the tentative agreement. But, Disneyland visitors should not take it for granted that the contract will pass. In fact, back in 2021, Disneyland employees rejected a similar proposed contract from the Masters Services Council. Therefore, if the rest of the union feels that the bargaining committee didn’t secure sufficient benefits from the resort, the contract could be turned down once again.

As someone who has worked multiple jobs to make ends meet, I can relate to the struggles of Disneyland cast members who have been affected by the stricter attendance policy implemented back in 2022. Having to balance my schedule between different employers was already a challenge, but the potential consequences for missing shifts at Disneyland made it even more difficult. The specifics of any wage increases or modifications to this policy are still uncertain, and I can only hope that they will bring some relief to those who have been struggling to make a living wage there.

If the union as a whole doesn’t agree with the contract, it doesn’t automatically result in a strike. Instead, both parties will resume negotiations. Nevertheless, the threat of a strike still remains. In such an event, Disneyland would likely continue its operations, but with a smaller workforce and employees taking on unfamiliar roles. Consequently, the park might experience reduced efficiency at best.

As a devoted gamer, I can only imagine how thrilled Disneyland Resort Cast Members must be about the upcoming contract. After all, they’re the unsung heroes who bring the enchantment to life in those magical parks we adore. Their role is pivotal in making our Disney experiences so unforgettable.

As D23 draws nearer in the coming week, around thousands of dedicated Disney enthusiasts were set to converge in Anaheim. In anticipation, numerous fans planned to explore the parks. With any luck, significant Disney Parks updates would be revealed, and an ideal scenario includes generous compensation for cast members.
