Can Peacock Podium? NBCUniversal Bets Big on Olympics to Boost Streaming Service

As a devoted fan of NBCUniversal‘s Peacock streaming service, I’m thrilled to see the platform stepping up its game for the Paris Olympics. After the rocky start during the Tokyo games, they’ve learned from their mistakes and are now promising a more comprehensive coverage experience.

Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming platform, made a bold move by incorporating the 2020 Tokyo Olympics into its debut. In January 2020, at Rockefeller Center’s Studio 8H, executives announced their strategy to broadcast the Olympics opening and closing ceremonies live on Peacock prior to their primetime TV transmission.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered Peacock’s initial plans, but the streaming platform was still introduced in 2020. However, when the Tokyo Olympics eventually took place the following year, NBCU had adapted and shifted its focus. Peacock provided live coverage for specific events such as gymnastics and basketball, along with exclusive studio shows. Regrettably, a complicated user interface and some technical issues hampered the company’s launch, an issue that executives have since acknowledged.

Mark Lazarus, NBCUniversal Media Group’s chairman, acknowledged to the assembled journalists in Studio 8H that our performance for our customers fell short of expectations. We failed to meet the promises we made to them.

If Peacock didn’t make it to the podium during the previous Olympics, they plan to put all their efforts into earning a medal at Paris. “We’ve gained valuable insights,” Lazarus stated, vowing “significant improvements” for the Paris Games.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that during the Paris games, the company intends to live-stream all the action straight to our screens. Every single sport, every ceremony, and even NBC broadcasts will be available. While some events will depend on the IOC’s world feed, Peacock has got you covered for lesser-known sports like Canoe Sprint or Badminton. For a more comprehensive viewing experience, though, I’d recommend tuning in to the primetime coverage. It’s like a “best of the day” show, featuring the most exciting moments from across all events – including opening ceremonies.

Molly Solomon, NBC’s Olympics production head, expressed her excitement, stating, “The prime-time broadcast is about to become even more captivating.” She highlighted that Maria Taylor will join the U.S. Olympic Team on their boat and conduct exclusive interviews for primetime viewers. Her suggestion? Don’t miss it twice!

Additionally, this platform offers an array of unique programs and technology exclusively for Peacock subscribers. These features include the ability to watch up to four events simultaneously, and a brand-new studio show named “Gold Zone” which is hosted by NFL RedZone veteran Scott Hanson.

Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson will serve as co-hosts for the Olympics highlights on the streaming platform. Meanwhile, podcast host Alex Cooper will lead interactive watch parties during the events.

“According to Peacock president Kelly Campbell, our objective is to offer dedicated fans an extensive range of resources for an engaging Olympics experience. At the same time, we aim to attract a younger audience by incorporating popular elements such as personalization and real-time interaction.”

In an impressive development, the company is leveraging advanced AI technology to generate personalized Olympic recaps, delivered by the renowned sportscaster Al Michaels to its users.

A few months ago during a team meeting, we were getting ready for a major event – the NFL Wild Card Playoff game on Peacock. This streaming event went on to break records as the biggest and most successful in U.S. history. At this gathering, we pondered over how AI could be utilized, not just for entertainment but also for making a positive impact. We aimed to enhance live sports with something innovative using artificial intelligence.

“During the lead-up to the playoff game, John Jelley, Peacock’s senior VP of product, suggested an idea: using generative AI to enhance the viewing experience for Olympics content. With so much material available, he believed this was the ideal opportunity. In his opinion, this wouldn’t have been achievable without recent advancements in AI and voice synthesis technology.”

In essence, NBCU views Peacock’s success as being closely tied to the future of sports and media. Though it currently boasts around 33 million paying subscribers, NBCU acts as if it has a much larger user base – possibly even surpassing 100 million – and isn’t shy about increasing prices accordingly.

“During the earnings call for the second quarter, Roberts mentioned that NBC will have a substantial amount of content, yet Peacock will offer even more. This caters to the current tendencies in viewers’ consumption habits.”

Mike Tirico, the primary Olympics host for NBC, expresses that his approach to sports has changed in the past decade. With two recently graduated college students in his family, he observes how they engage with sports.

“I’ve noticed how the scenery has evolved since I used to watch Saturdays’ Major League baseball games during my childhood.”

I’m thrilled about the shifting industry trends and can’t wait to see how my favorite company capitalizes on this change to establish a successful streaming service.
