As Outlander's Final Season Continues Production, Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore Explains Approach To Keeping Diana Gabaldon 'In The Loop' On Book Changes

As a dedicated fan and avid gamer of the Outlander series, I’ve grown accustomed to the thrilling twists and turns that have kept me hooked for seasons. However, the recent news about the second half of Season 7 and the upcoming eighth season has left me feeling a bit uneasy.

The anticipation builds as we anxiously await the second half of “Outlander” Season 7 on Starz. Fortunately, we have an update: the premiere is scheduled in the 2024 television lineup. In the meantime, the cast and crew have been busy filming Season 8, the last installment. Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan have revealed some long-absent characters set to make a comeback. Recently, executive producer Ronald D. Moore spoke with TopMob about the show concluding before author Diana Gabaldon finishes her “Outlander” book series.

Ronald D. Moore, the TV developer of “Outlander” and continuing executive producer, discussed his projects with Mick Joest from TopMob during Comic-Con in San Diego. When queried if planning for Season 8 was influenced by Diana Gabaldon not yet publishing her tenth and final planned “Outlander” book, Moore disclosed:

The show closely collaborates with Diana, who is the author of the books. We’ve always adapted the stories while keeping Diana informed and seeking her feedback. This partnership has been essential in our creative process. Our plan was never to work without her involvement since she intends to continue writing for some time.

Moore clarified that in previous seasons of “Outlander,” he discussed the transition from book to screen. He explained that it’s necessary to make adjustments when adapting written works for television or film. Diana Gabaldon, the author, has reportedly been kept informed and given feedback throughout the process.

After the groundbreaking midseason finale of Season 7, Gabaldon expressed her gratitude towards how the show’s crew was handling the challenge of compressing the source material. She is also acknowledged as a consulting producer for the “Blood of My Blood” prequel, even though she wasn’t fully sure about its details earlier in the production.

Regarding if the last part of the seventh season or any episode from the eighth season will provide clearer explanations about the time travel in “Outlander” or the apparition of young Jamie that once emerged before Frank, we’ll have to wait and see.

In early 2023, it became public knowledge that “Outlander” was coming to an end. To help fans cope with this news, a prequel titled “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” was announced. Later on, Sam Heughan shared insights into the mood on set following this announcement. The conclusion of the series signifies the end of an era for a show that managed to continue despite the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and delivered decades worth of romance, heartbreak, and historical exploration through its time travel narrative.

The finish line is not in sight yet, as the second part of Season 7 won’t debut until November 22 and Season 8 likely won’t begin before 2025 at the earliest.
