Box Office: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Reaps Record $38.5M in Previews, Best Ever for an R-Rated Film and More

As a long-time gamer and comic book fan, I can’t help but be thrilled by the record-breaking success of Marvel Studios and Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Having grown up with these iconic characters, it’s amazing to see Merc with the Mouth and Wolverine looking better than ever on the big screen.

Merc, also known as the Merciless, and our longtime buddy Wolverine are both in great shape these days.

As a longtime fan of comic books and blockbuster movies, I’m absolutely thrilled to share my excitement over the incredible Thursday preview numbers for Marvel Studios and Disney’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” With an astonishing $38.5 million take, this R-rated film has set a new record for best-ever previews in its category, surpassing even the most successful PG-13 titles.

Shawn Levy oversaw the production of “Deadpool 3,” the upcoming installment in the popular series. In this film, Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool, and Hugh Jackman joins the cast as Logan/Wolverine. Their friendship adds excitement to the movie’s promotion, which included a visit to Comic-Con’s Hall H on Thursday for an exclusive panel and screening of the nearly two-and-a-half hour film. (Fans were thrilled with this event, culminating in an unforgettable experience.)

The global promotional blitz for “Deadpool” is proving successful: the third installment is raking in impressive numbers abroad, generating $64.8 million within the initial two days, representing a 57% increase over the first film and a 48% boost from its sequel.

It’s challenging to interpret the impressive preview earnings of over $160 million in North America for this R-rated film, as some experts predict a weekend opening between $160 million and $175 million. Most studios and box office forecasters find it unlikely that an R-rated movie will surpass the $200 million mark during its domestic debut. However, David Herrin of The Quorom is optimistic about this possibility.

The critically acclaimed film featuring Deadpool and Wolverine is drawing large crowds with impressive box office numbers, boasting perfect scores on PostTrack and an impressive 97% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In February 2016, the initial release of Deadpool broke records by bringing in a domestic box office of $133.7 million, making it the biggest opening for an R-rated movie to date. This achievement proved that a superhero film could attract large audiences despite its restrictive rating. Approximately two years later, Deadpool 2 opened with a domestic box office of $125.5 million following $18.6 million in previews, setting the record for the highest opening for an R-rated film until now.

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, Feige’s Marvel gained control over the Deadpool franchise. Subsequently, the first R-rated film, featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, was produced under Disney and Marvel.

I’m a big fan of Reynolds and his team at Maximum Effort, along with Disney, as they’ve been working hard to expand their audience by targeting women. And you know who else is on board with this mission? None other than my dear friend Taylor Swift! She recently used her massive social media influence to share a post endorsing the movie and even included a link to buy tickets. She exclaimed, “If you’re in for things that are indescribably amazing, then you won’t want to miss this! Shout out to Wade Wilson, a.k.a., the generous sperm donor for my godchildren.”

More to come.
