As a long-time fan of Doctor Who, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear about the upcoming spinoff, The War Between The Land And The Sea. Having grown up with the iconic British series, I’ve seen the evolution of its spinoffs and the expansion of the lore surrounding the Time Lord. But what makes this particular announcement especially exciting is the return of an actor from David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor years – Russell Tovey!
Since 1963, the world of Doctor Who has grown richer with the introduction of various spinoffs such as Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class. However, accessing this content may now require a Disney+ subscription due to a new partnership between Disney and the BBC. The latest development in this collaboration was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, bringing excitement as an actor from David Tennant’s Tenure as the Doctor is set to reappear.
Disney-branded TV in collaboration with BBC revealed at Comic-Con that a new five-part series titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea” is upcoming. This intriguing spinoff of Doctor Who will commence filming next month. The storyline revolves around an ancient and formidable marine species rising from the ocean, making contact with humans and causing a global crisis. In response, UNIT steps in to handle this international predicament. This marks the comeback of the Sea Devils, who were first introduced as Doctor Who villains back in 1972 and last appeared on screen in “Legend of the Sea Devils” in 2022. Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient will reprise their roles as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim, respectively, while Guru Mbatha-Raw from Loki is set to join the cast.
I’d like to bring up Russell Tovey, who is one of the prominent actors in “The War Between The Land And The Sea.” If you don’t recall him from the image, let me remind you that he previously featured in “Doctor Who,” portraying Midshipman Alonso Frame in the 2008 Christmas special “Voyage of the Damned.” Midshipman Frame was a crew member on a starship replica of the USS Titanic, helping the Tenth Doctor prevent it from colliding with Earth. Later, he made a cameo appearance in “The End of Time Part 2,” which marked Tenant’s final regular stint as the Doctor in “Doctor Who.” Additionally, Tovey has notable roles in shows like “Quantico” and “Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans,” and he played The Ray in the Arrowverse crossover “Crisis on Earth-X.”
After the season finale of Doctor Who, I have an idea about how Ruby’s mystery being resolved might influence the Doctor’s next adventure.

Instead of “So is Russell Tovey reprising his role as Alonso Frame in ‘The War Between The Land And The Sea’?”, you could ask “Will Russell Tovey once again appear as Alonso Frame in this new production, or is he taking on a new character?” The answer being that he’s playing a new character. It’s common for “Doctor Who” to bring back actors to play different roles, such as Colin Baker and Peter Capaldi who went on to become the Sixth and Twelfth Doctors respectively after earlier appearances as minor characters. However, the specific nature of Tovey’s character in the spinoff is yet to be revealed – whether he’s a member of UNIT, one of the Sea Devils or an antagonist.
Off-camera, Dylan Holmes-Williams will be in charge of directing “The War Between The Land And The Sea.” Previously, he had directed episodes “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble” during this recent season of “Doctor Who.” Russell T. Davies, the current showrunner and executive producer of “Doctor Who,” was responsible for creating this spin-off and co-wrote it with Pete McTighe. He also released this statement:
It’s a privilege to collaborate with such an impressive group of actors. This production is packed with power and excitement, certain to create significant ripples throughout the Doctor Who universe. In the Doctor’s absence, humanity faces potential peril.
With “The War Between The Land And The Sea” now formally released, TopMob will keep you informed about the upcoming developments from this spin-off. Regarding “Doctor Who,” its forthcoming Christmas special is named “Joy to the World” and will introduce Nicola Coughlan from “Bridgerton.” The second season, referred to as “Season 2,” is scheduled for release in 2025 and introduces Varada Sethu as a new companion named Belinda Chandra. She will be joining Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor and Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday.
