As a long-time fan of “Chicago Fire,” I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment and even a hint of resentment towards the new chief, Dom Pascal. Don’t get me wrong, Dermot Mulroney is an excellent actor, and his addition to the cast is certainly welcome. However, as someone who has watched the show since its inception, I can’t help but feel that Chris Herrmann or Mouch deserved a shot at taking over from Wallace Boden.

The new chief for “Chicago Fire” has been announced, but taking on this role comes with considerable challenges – challenges that may be difficult for him to meet. Although he’ll undoubtedly bring some new energy to the team, it’s unexpected that a newcomer was chosen instead of promoting one of the longtime favorites.
Exclusively revealed by Deadline, Dermot Mulroney has been cast as the new character, Dom Pascal, for the show. This role was filled during June’s casting sessions. Described as a jovial and sociable contrast to the more somber Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker), Pascal is a Florida native with marital issues. He’s capable of focusing intently and lending a helping hand when necessary. Although details about his character name or background remain undisclosed, it seems that the production has found an excellent fit in Mulroney, who boasts a diverse acting resume encompassing both comedic and dramatic roles.
For those who assumed Chris Herrmann would become the new firehouse captain following Boden’s encouragement in the Season 12 finale, Pascal’s arrival will come as an unexpected surprise. Although Mulroney’s casting brings excitement, fans recovering from Boden’s emotional departure might initially be disappointed – only time will tell if they’ll give the cheerful Pascal a chance.
Herrmann and Mouch deserved a shot at becoming chief too
The issue with Dom Pascal’s storyline is that audiences have long anticipated Herrmann advancing in the firehouse hierarchy after hiding his abilities for years. Therefore, seeing him miss out on this promotion could lead to disappointment and potentially cause viewers to lose interest in Pascal before he has a chance to fully develop.
David Eigenberg explained to Deadline why and how his character, Chris, might refuse the promotion during the One Chicago TCA panel. He expressed that Chris was taken aback because he didn’t anticipate the Chief’s words. In real-life fire departments, some firefighters remain firefighters their entire careers. So when you get promoted to a Lieutenant, you’re no longer referred to as a firefighter. You are one, but the title is changed. Chris would miss being in the action, Eigenberg emphasized, and we’ll have to wait and see how the writers handle this situation.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but mention that although Herrmann seems like the next in line, there’s another firefighter who could potentially step into Boden’s role effectively.
Audiences also think Mouch could have taken on the role
Chris Herrmann isn’t the only one with the potential for a promotion in the fire department. In the Season 12 finale, Randy “Mouch” McHolland (Christian Stolte) announces his intention to take the lieutenant’s exam. With help from his wife Trudy (Amy Morton), he’s been studying hard. Throughout his career, Mouch has bravely faced fires and overcomes obstacles to secure his place at the firehouse. A promotion to lieutenant is a significant step forward, even if it falls short of becoming the chief. Introducing a new character for this role seems less necessary than advancing an existing one.
Despite requiring a revitalization, the drama at Engine 51 on “Chicago Fire” is facing additional challenges. Dom Pascal’s arrival won’t be an easy transition, especially with Wallace Boden not fully departing and Eamonn Walker making return appearances in Season 13. Dermot Mulroney brings undeniable talent and boldness to the table as Pascal. However, it remains uncertain if audiences will welcome him with open arms.
