As someone who has spent countless hours in front of the TV, binge-watching my favorite shows, I must admit that August is turning out to be an exciting month for me! With such a diverse lineup of programs, I can’t help but feel like there’s something for everyone.

When the finale of “House of the Dragon” is released on August 4, all eyes will be on Max. However, followers might be disappointed to know that HBO’s lineup for the remainder of August is rather underwhelming. It’s not easy to keep delivering home runs consistently! Fortunately, there are a few exciting new seasons worth looking forward to. “Industry” is back for its third season, and the Polish thriller “The Thaw” will debut its second season.

In August, MAX unveils a hidden gem as a successful 2002 Brazilian crime thriller, “City of God,” transforms into a sequel series for television, following the acclaim it received in films. Additionally, viewers subscribed to MAX’s expanded networks have an abundance of drama on TLC, delicious cuisine on The Food Network, and captivating true-crime stories on ID. Here’s what’s new on MAX and its extended networks for August.

Industry Season 3

Streaming on August 11

Amid London’s bustling Financial District, “Industry” provides an engrossing portrayal of the cutthroat financial world. This intriguing series focuses on the experiences of new graduates working at Pierpoint & Co., with returning characters played by Myha’la Herrold as Harper Stern, Marisa Abela as Yasmin Kara-Hanani, Harry Lawtey as Robert Spearing, David Jonsson as Gus Sackey, and Ken Leung as Eric Tao. In the upcoming third season, we can expect the introduction of new figures, including Kit Harington’s anticipated character, Sir Henry Muck.

As I delve into the gripping world of “The Thaw” (Odwilż), I follow Detective Katarzyna Zawieja in her investigation after a tragic discovery – a young mother and her newborn, brutally taken from their community near the Odra River in Szczecin. The chilling Polish thriller leaves me on the edge of my seat with its captivating atmosphere and a compelling performance by Katarzyna Wajda as Zawieja. However, some viewers have expressed disappointment, finding it overly reliant on familiar genre elements.

Despite some criticisms, The Thaw has been renewed for a second season, providing viewers with an incentive to revisit and skeptics with an opportunity to assess if the upcoming installments will refine its rough edges and create a more striking noir mystery. (The second season of The Thaw premieres on Max starting August 23 as part of their original content.)

City of God: The Fight Rages On (Cidade de Deus: A Luta Não Para) Season 1

As a huge fan of cinema, I can’t help but express my deep admiration for Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund’s groundbreaking work, “City of God,” released in 2002. This gripping crime-thriller left an indelible mark on Brazilian cinema, earning critical acclaim and captivating audiences around the world.

In an exciting turn of events this August, HBO unveils “City of God: The Fight Rages On,” a six-episode series continuation of the original movie. Starring Alexandre Rodrigues reprising his role as Buscapé, the story unfolds in the 2000s where Buscapé finds himself entangled in the complex web of conflicts within the Cidade de Deus community. Facing off against police, drug dealers, and militias, this thrilling series brings back many familiar faces and maintains the iconic visual style of “City of God.” The highly-anticipated premiere airs on Max on August 25.

Besides what was previously mentioned, Max is enriching its kids’ entertainment offerings with the arrival of “Hop” season 1B starting August 15.
