Josh Hartnett Shared The Honestly Hilarious 'Advice' Matt Damon Gave Him When He Gained Weight For Oppenheimer

As a long-time film enthusiast and avid gamer, I can’t help but be intrigued by the latest developments in Hollywood. And what’s more exciting than seeing familiar faces in new roles? Josh Hartnett, who is about to send shivers down our spines with his chilling performance as a serial killer in “Trap,” recently shared an amusing anecdote from his time on Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.”

Josh Hartnett is upcoming on the movie scene, taking on a strange and ominous character in “Trap.” Prior to this chilling portrayal of a serial killer confined at a music venue, Hartnett was part of an impressive ensemble in “Oppenheimer.” In this production, he acted alongside acclaimed actors such as Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon. Hartnet also collaborated with Damon on the Oscar-winning film. Remarkably, Damon shared some amusing guidance when Hartnett chose to put on weight for his role in the historical drama.

In Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” Josh Hartnett portrays nuclear physicist Ernest Lawrence, who collaborated with J. Robert Oppenheimer. On Jimmy Fallon’s late-night talk show, Hartnett discussed his experience working alongside Matt Damon, who portrayed General Leslie Groves in the film. During their time on set, Damon shared valuable insights about human nature that would have been beneficial earlier. Hartnett elaborated on this during the interview, which can be found on YouTube.

When I met him on set, he generously shared a wealth of valuable insights with me. One suggestion, however, left me perplexed and disheartened. He strongly advised against the weight gain I had already accomplished for my role – around 30 pounds. He warned me, “You’ll never get that off again.” I was taken aback, as this wasn’t a sentiment I expected to hear from him. Over the course of production, he persisted in sharing his concerns, insisting that my body would constantly crave to regain that weight and I’d be stuck in a cycle of losing and gaining. I found myself feeling discouraged by his words, thanking him with a mix of frustration and confusion as I continued to follow through with my role’s requirements.

Yes, “Thanks, Matt.” However, that piece of advice came too late unfortunately. It’s uncertain if Matthew Baglio (Black Hawk Down actor) had to put on weight for his role as Ernest Lawrence. Yet, actors such as Joaquin Phoenix and Christian Bale have gone to great lengths with weight loss and gain for their film roles. Although the timing wasn’t ideal for Baglio, I choose to believe he was looking out for his co-star’s wellbeing by sharing the challenges of gaining excessive weight for a movie.

Matt Damon might be sharing his own experiences about shedding pounds for movie roles, as he did during the promotion of “Ford v. Ferrari.” He once dropped an astonishing 60 lbs. in just four months for “Courage Under Fire,” achieving this feat with the assistance of a bodybuilder and a stringent diet. However, following the shoot, Damon confessed to the toll it took on his health, admitting that losing such a large amount of weight solely for filming flashback scenes, only to regain it all within three weeks, was an unbearable ordeal. It’s hard enough for me to fathom dealing with this predicament as an actor.

Although the blunt advice Matt Damon gave to Josh Hartnett during the filming of “Oppenheimer” might not have been useful in that specific context, Hartnett can nonetheless use those insights to enhance his future acting projects. In other words, even if Damon’s guidance was unhelpful for this role, it doesn’t diminish the fact that he attempted to offer assistance as an experienced actor to a younger colleague.

You have the opportunity to watch Josh Hartnett, Matt Damon, and other notable actors in “Oppenheimer.” This film can be streamed with a Prime Video subscription. Additionally, don’t miss Hartnett’s latest suspenseful release, titled “Trap,” which premieres on August 2 as part of the 2024 movie lineup.
