So Help Me Todd’s Skylar Astin Reflects On His ‘Sex Bear’ Days On Grey’s Anatomy, And There’s A Lot To Unpack Here

As a dedicated fan of both Grey’s Anatomy and So Help Me Todd, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness every time I think about the untimely end to Skylar Astin’s character Todd Eames on Grey’s Anatomy. Having rewatched their romantic arc in Season 18, I was taken aback by how quickly and unceremoniously Todd was written off the show.

Fans of “So Help Me Todd” were disappointed when the news broke that the CBS dramedy would be among the TV shows canceled in 2024. After completing its second and final season, lead actor Skylar Astin reflected on the end of another character he portrayed – Todd Eames from “Grey’s Anatomy.” Although Todd, the private investigator, bid farewell, fans may recall Todd Eames, whose tenure was cut short. Most notably, Todd is associated with the infamous “sex bear” incident, where he had a brief romance with Jo Wilson. Recently, Astin revisited these awkward memories to share the background of that storyline.

Skylar Astin recently caught up with Camilla Luddington from “Grey’s Anatomy,” who portrays Jo in the ABC medical series, on her and Jessica Capshaw’s podcast. When Astin made his debut on “Grey’s Anatomy” in Season 18, there was instant chemistry between Jo and Todd. However, their romantic storyline didn’t last long as Astin received an offer to star in “So Help Me Todd,” leading the “Grey’s” writers to write off his character after only four episodes. Astin shared that:

I’ve been through a rather sudden and unexpected breakup, leaving me feeling cast off like a unwanted anchor. And it seems that you and I were both deeply engrossed in a passionate game of love. One moment we were lost in each other, the next he was clinging desperately while I found myself repulsed by his advances. It’s a strange and disorienting experience, to go from being so deeply connected to feeling completely detached in the blink of an eye.

Dumping Jo blatantly was Camilla Luddington’s chosen method to move on from past relationships, following years of hesitance between the two women. She had been yearning for a lighthearted connection after enduring an abusive marriage with Paul and an unexpected departure from Alex Karev.

As a seasoned reader and observer of human emotions, I’ve seen my fair share of unexpected shifts in romantic feelings between people. But Jo’s sudden change of heart towards Todd, as revealed by Skylar Astin, left me utterly bewildered.

In other words, although they decided to let me go from the project for now, I have been trying to win Jo over with thoughtful gestures. I would surprise her at work with cookies or help with errands. However, my actions may have crossed a line as I reportedly sang an operatic tune during our intimate moment. (We didn’t film that scene.)

Despite how awkward that detail might be, I strongly believe it’s an accurate representation of the character portrayed by the “Pitch Perfect” actor. Sadly, they didn’t capture that moment on camera. Instead, they filmed what transpired afterward. The actor went on to say:

Now she’s having a conversation with Chris Carmack’s character about her uncertainty regarding this Todd character. Suddenly, I appear carrying a massive, over-sized stuffed animal. I exclaim, “I got you a bear… an ‘intimacy bear’ if you will.” Yes, that line was indeed spoken aloud in the script.

As a longtime fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I must admit I was taken aback by Skylar Astin’s unexpected exit as Jo’s husband, Todd. The way he left things hanging between Jo and Chris Carmack’s Link was certainly intriguing. Astin added fuel to the fire when he mentioned that the door could potentially be reopened for his return down the line – should things not work out between the two doctors.

You have the opportunity to revisit Skylar Astin’s appearance on “Grey’s Anatomy” and other preferred seasons of the show by streaming it on Netflix or Hulu, both popular subscription-based streaming platforms. On the other hand, the upcoming 21st season of “Grey’s Anatomy” will air on ABC every Thursday at 10 p.m., starting September 26, 2024. With a Hulu subscription, you can watch it the following day.
