As a long-time fan of animated sitcoms, I’ve grown up with Halloween specials being as much a part of my October routine as pumpkin carving and apple cider. But it seems that in recent years, the number of spooky TV offerings has dwindled. Fortunately, two of my favorite shows, The Simpsons and Family Guy, are here to save the day.
In the past, watching Halloween-themed TV shows was as common as live sports, local news, and Thanksgiving parades. However, this tradition no longer holds true in today’s world where numerous shows are not even being aired during October. Luckily, “The Simpsons” continues to entertain us with their annual scary movie parodies in 2024 through two “Treehouse of Horror” episodes. We eagerly anticipate another original Halloween-themed adventure from “Bob’s Burgers.” Sadly, “Family Guy” has announced that their Halloween special will only be available for streaming. Let’s explore in greater detail the holiday plans of both popular animated shows, “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons.” Fans of these series can look forward to special treats, in addition to the usual antics, as revealed in the upcoming TV lineup. We’ll start by discussing Glen Powell’s first visit to Quahog on “Family Guy,” starring in the show as a guest actor in “Twisters.”
Family Guy’s Halloween Special, Guest-Starring Glen Powell
At San Diego Comic-Con during Family Guy’s Season 23 panel, it was announced that two holiday specials are in production. The first one is scheduled to release on October 14, exclusively for Hulu subscribers. Unlike regular episodes, it won’t be broadcast on TV simultaneously but will only be available online. It remains uncertain if Fox will air these specials at a later date. For now, fans can enjoy the exclusive streaming experience.
In the upcoming episode of “Family Guy,” Glen Powell joins the cast as Patrick McCloskey, who currently holds the title of Quahog’s annual Pumpkin Contest champion. However, this year, Peter and his friends are determined to unseat Patrick from his throne by any means necessary. The nature of the “Pumpkin Contest” leaves me amused yet perplexed, as it provides no indication of whether it involves carving, tossing, or cooking pumpkins.
As a huge fan of both theater and animation, I’m absolutely thrilled about the latest news coming from the world of “Family Guy.” Derek Jacobi, a renowned British actor with a rich and esteemed career in stage and screen, is set to join the show’s voice cast. Known for his Tony- and Emmy-winning performances in productions like “Gladiator” and the “Harry Potter” franchise, Jacobi will now lend his talents to bring “Rupert” to life.
The Simpsons’ Two Treehouse Of Horror Specials
We’ll travel from Quahog to Springfield this Halloween season, as “The Simpsons” prepares to rule the small screen with two terrifying episodes. These spooky installments mark an excellent new direction for the iconic series, which has been pushing boundaries since its Stephen King-inspired “Treehouse of Horror: Not IT” in Season 34. In this latest edition, viewers can look forward to both a classic anthology format and a themed collection of three chilling stories.
In “Treehouse of Horror XXXV,” there are more scary stories related to elections, where Springfield residents face giant monsters born out of political anger. The second segment takes us back to the Victorian era with Mr. Burns, whose Thanksgiving is disrupted by the vengeful spirits of his mistreated employees. For animation lovers, the third episode titled “Denim” promises a unique stop-motion experience (as described by Fox) where Homer develops an unusual attachment to a pair of alien trousers.
I’m excited for the upcoming episode, “Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,” which takes inspiration from Ray Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes” with a less playful title. In this installment, Lisa teams up with a mysteriously tattooed carnival barker from a spooky night circus for three chilling adventures: one transporting us back to the 1950s, another dropping us right into our “retro-present” with an eerie twist, and a harrowing vision of the future where prestige TV reigns supreme.
I’m really looking forward to it! By the way, an unrelated mention: The new seasons of both “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy” will include episodes poking fun at HBO’s popular mystery-drama series, “The White Lotus.”
The Halloween episode of “Family Guy” on Hulu is set to premiere on October 14, while the start of Season 23 has been postponed until midseason. As for “The Simpsons,” they have not yet announced definite dates for their “Treehouse of Horror” specials. However, Season 36 will begin on September 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET, and Season 35 can be streamed with a Disney+ subscription at that time.
