As a long-time fan of the Law & Order franchise, I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness and disappointment as I watch NBC’s Olympics coverage and see the promos for this fall’s Law & Order Thursdays. Don’t get me wrong, it’s always exciting to see glimpses of my favorite shows returning, but something feels amiss.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel the excitement building up for NBC’s fall TV lineup, even though we’re still a few weeks away from its official return to primetime. The 2024 Olympics in Paris have given us a sneak peek into what’s coming our way, with Law & Order Thursdays promos popping up during the commercial breaks. It’s fun to catch a glimpse of what’s to come, but something feels amiss when it comes to the usual promos featuring Christopher Meloni and the casts of Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU.
During prime time Olympics broadcasts on NBC, a promotional segment has been repeatedly shown. This spotlight focuses on themes of teamwork, justice, and perseverance through clips from “Law & Order” and “SVU.” Previously, such extensive representation from these shows wasn’t present. The shift in programming comes as NBC no longer plans to air three hours of the “Law & Order” franchise each week starting this fall. However, it should be noted that “Law & Order: Organized Crime” Season 5 has not been officially cancelled but has been removed from NBC’s schedule, making its continuation feel uncertain.
As a long-time fan of “Law & Order: Organized Crime” (OC), I was taken aback when I heard that the show wasn’t renewed for a fifth season along with its sister shows, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (SVU) and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” back in March. I had eagerly anticipated each new episode of OC, and months of fan campaigns and speculation ensued before the confirmation that it would indeed return.
As a long-time fan of the Law & Order universe, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when reflecting on the evolution of this iconic franchise. Having grown up watching the original Law & Order series, it was truly a treat to witness the creation of a primetime block featuring Organized Crime and SVU.
Earlier this year, Hargitay indicated that there might be a fusion of the two series, so fans can rest assured that Benson and Stabler’s story isn’t over just because one show remains on NBC while the other moves to Peacock. Considering the structure of the three Law & Order shows, I believe Organized Crime could thrive on streaming due to its more serialized nature compared to SVU and L&O. With its previous seasons already available on the platform, there’s a chance that Stabler and his team might explore darker themes than they previously could on network television.
On Thursdays starting October 3, NBC’s Law & Order airs at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, followed by SVU at 9 p.m. ET. The 10 p.m. ET slot, which was previously held by Organized Crime, will now be occupied by season 2 of Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s Found.
