Jimmy Kimmel, John Mulaney Both Pass On Hosting Oscars Ceremony

As a devoted fan of both Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney, I can’t help but be intrigued by their recent decisions to decline hosting the 97th Academy Awards. It’s no secret that both comedians have left indelible marks on the world of entertainment, each in their unique ways.

The 97th Academy Awards have yet to land a host, though it’s not for lack of trying.

According to Puck News, ABC is rumored to have extended invitations to Jimmy Kimmel and John Mulaney, but neither accepted. Luckily, there’s still some time before the Oscars, which won’t be aired until March 2nd on their host network, allowing them to find another suitable host.

Initially, the first invitation was extended to Jimmy Kimmel, a popular late-night host who has previously hosted the Academy Awards on four occasions, including the last two years. Interestingly, when he accepted the offer in 2023, he joked, “I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times.” Regardless, given his past success and his association with Disney, he was an apparent frontrunner for the role. However, Kimmel declined the offer, as he had previously turned down hosting this year’s Emmy Awards, which will also be aired on ABC.

It might be unexpected for those familiar with Kimmel’s acceptance of significant opportunities as a team player that he would decline this latest offer. However, despite hosting the Emmys three times for ABC and annually serving as roast master at the Disney upfront, and continuously renewing his late-night contract while hinting about retiring, Kimmel has expressed a desire for a more balanced life in recent years. This desire seems to have influenced his decision to take summer breaks on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

John Mulaney, known for his charisma and risk-taking persona, emerged as a strong contender for the hosting job. Following his successful performance at the Governors Awards earlier this year, Mulaney’s name became a popular topic among fans and industry insiders alike. Some even viewed that off-camera gig as an unofficial audition, which Mulaney aced with ease. Vulture even published an article suggesting Mulaney should host every award show. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Mulaney expressed his interest in hosting the Oscars. “Why not?” he said. “It would be a blast. It’s the Academy Awards. Johnny Carson did it.”

As a seasoned event producer with several high-profile shows under my belt, I can certainly appreciate the allure and prestige of hosting the Oscars. However, having gone through the grueling process myself, I also understand why someone like Jonah Mulaney might hesitate. Hosting such a massive event requires a huge time commitment and immense energy – not to mention the added pressure of delivering witty and engaging material for millions of viewers.
