Did you know Mani Ratnam made Mita Vasisht wear full-sleeved clothes in Dil Se to prevent her biceps and body from overpowering Manisha Koirala?

As a dedicated follower of Indian cinema, I have always admired the depth and complexity that talented actors like Mita Vasisht bring to their roles. Her experiences during the shoot of Dil Se, as she shared in her recent interview with The Lallantop, shed light on the often overlooked challenges faced by actors in the industry.

1. Acclaimed actress Mita Vasisht, well-known in Indian television and cinema, has featured in many significant films. She shared screen with Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala in Mani Ratnam’s critically acclaimed film “Dil Se” from 1998. In a recent conversation, she talked about the challenges faced during its production, such as constant script changes and the intense training required for her character.

Mita Vasisht on Mani Ratnam’s decision to modify her clothes in Dil Se

During an interview with The Lallantop, Mita Vasisht shared an annoying experience about a particular scene with Manisha Koirala. The impact of the scene relied on Mita’s physical presence, but director Mani Ratnam stepped in and altered her outfit to prevent Manisha from being upstaged as the main actress.

In the scene where Mita helped Manisha Koirala with a bomb vest, Vasisht originally wore a jacket filled with explosives without any clothes beneath, while Koirala’s character was unclothed. However, after the initial take, director Mani Ratnam decided to alter this setup. Santosh Sivan agreed to the shot, but later, Mani Ratnam phoned and asked costume designer Piya to give Mita a T-shirt so that her body wouldn’t overshadow Koirala’s character.

Later, I distinctly heard Mani Ratnam exclaim, “She needs something more than a T-shirt, provide her with long-sleeved garments that will completely conceal her.” At this point, it dawned on me that my muscles and physique were overshadowing Manisha. She has a striking appearance, yet she didn’t invest much effort in building her physical strength. Her character was supposed to be militaristic, but it seemed she hadn’t dedicated enough time to sculpting her body to match the role.” She expressed this sentiment.

Mita Vasisht is all praise for Shah Rukh Khan

1. The actress stated that she wasn’t feeling upset in that moment since she had just wrapped up an exhausting six-minute fight scene with Shah Rukh Khan moments earlier. She commended his professionalism and the assistance he provided during the high-intensity sequence, particularly when he shielded her by placing his hand behind her head as they both leaned against a rock. Furthermore, she disclosed that despite sustaining an injury from a stone blow and bleeding, Shah Rukh Khan continued to be considerate and supportive throughout the experience.

Nevertheless, her annoyance resurfaced upon learning that the action-packed battle sequence was omitted from the movie, a choice she believed catered more to the main actress’s role in the film.
