As a big fan of relaxing games and beautiful visuals, Endless Ocean Luminous has quickly become one of my favorite discoveries on the Nintendo Switch. I’ve always been drawn to underwater adventures, but this game takes it to another level with its calming gameplay and stunning graphics.
On Nintendo Switch, Endless Ocean Luminous offers an incredibly soothing and visually stunning experience. Although it may not be the most thrilling underwater adventure compared to games like Subnautica, it’s worth exploring for its tranquil charm.
1. “Luminous represents the third installment in a relatively obscure series designed for Nintendo systems. The Endless Ocean series has long been a hidden treasure within Nintendo’s catalog, and Luminous continues this trend as an underwater scuba adventure. Essentially, players immerse themselves in an ocean environment and catalog various marine life forms. There are no oxygen meters to worry about, nor can any sea creatures harm you – simply swim and enjoy the sensation of weightlessness.”
Swimming in Endless Ocean Luminous feels like a delight with minimal control requirements. You can maneuver through the water by moving around, ascending or descending, and propelling forward. While interacting with marine life and gathering items does involve pressing extra buttons, these actions are uncomplicated and do not include any intricate mini-games.

Luminous’s allure primarily lies in discovering a colossal underwater world teeming with diverse life forms. Brace yourself for encountering an abundance of fish, given the game’s ocean is expansive and not everything can be identified right away. Locating particular fish may prove challenging as they blend with other marine creatures, necessitating careful examination from players.
Initially, when newcomers embark on Endless Ocean Luminous’ Story Mode, they could mistakenly assume it’s a straightforward journey due to brief early-game tutorials. But once you break away from the narrative, you can choose Dive and freely roam the ocean at your leisure. In reality, the game’s charm primarily lies in its open-ocean exploration, as the storyline may not be overly engaging compared to the vastness of the underwater world.
Luckily for me as a gamer, I’ll be spending countless hours diving into this seemingly endless ocean (can’t wait!), and while moving forward with the story does require some sea creature registrations, it’s not overly burdensome. For those who are eager to uncover the game’s narrative quickly, it might seem a bit tedious, but for me, I’m looking forward to these free dives. However, the progression could have been smoother, but overall, I’m excited about the exploration this game offers!

As a passionate fan, I can’t help but be in awe of how stunning the graphics are in this game, even if progression isn’t at the forefront of players’ minds. Developer AKIRA has truly outdone themselves on the Switch with this visually impressive title. The creatures are beautifully rendered, and the ocean environments are breathtakingly gorgeous. What’s more, the “pop-in” is handled seamlessly since the ocean serves as a backdrop for the next location coming into view. It’s like an underwater New Pokemon Snap experience in terms of quality.

In Endless Ocean Luminous, exploring and cataloging marine life and retrieving lost items earns players currency. This funds can be applied towards customizing your avatar’s appearance. Regrettably, you cannot alter the fundamental structure of your diving gear – no elaborate scuba suits like Samus Aran’s. However, various color options are available to add individuality. While it’s enjoyable to unlock new colors, more consideration could have been given to these customization rewards.
1. Even though Luminous’s unlockables are somewhat restricted, it’s beneficial that they exist to motivate players, given that they’ll encounter a lot of water. Although the swimming mechanics and ocean exploration are enjoyable and soothing, extended play can become monotonous. Fortunately, the game is available on Switch, making it an ideal choice for brief moments of relaxation; we don’t suggest prolonged gaming sessions.

It’s fortunate that during your dives, Luminous offers delightful tunes. You might want to listen to them using headphones for a more enriching experience. The blend of these harmonious tunes with authentic underwater noises enhances the sense of immersion and tranquility.
Playing with friends in Endless Ocean Luminous is predicted to add excitement, as you’ll get to embark on adventures together and discover its depths side by side. Although we didn’t test this feature during our evaluation, the visuals are breathtaking and it promises to be an enjoyable experience. Remember to have a stable internet connection though, as the Switch’s online functionality can be inconsistent at times.
Luminous is a lovely underwater game with soothing gameplay, but it offers less depth and variety compared to other underwater games like Subnautica. If players are looking for a more substantial experience, they might prefer the challenges and complexity of Subnautica. However, Endless Ocean caters to a specific audience who enjoy simpler gameplay.
