Just Stop Oil Activists Who Threw Soup at Van Gogh’s ‘Sunflowers’ Await Prison Sentence

The two activists, who are barely out of their teenage years, had a noble intention to raise awareness about the climate crisis and the high cost of living.

Two individuals associated with the Just Stop Oil group, who recently splashed soup onto Vincent Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” (1888) artwork, may face prison time as per a BBC news update, indicating their upcoming sentencing.

At the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, activists Phoebe Plummer and Anna Holland, aged 22, nearly destroyed one of the world’s most precious artworks, according to Judge Christopher Hehir at Southwark Crown Court. Since then, both women have been forbidden from entering museums or galleries and are banned from carrying glue, paint, or any adhesive materials in public places.

1. Holland and Plummer first opened a can of tomato soup near the protective glass surrounding the ancient artwork, posing a question: “Is art or life more valuable? Is it more important than sustenance, justice, or our planet and its people? The escalating cost of living is directly linked to the oil crisis.”

The two individuals involved are now required to mentally and emotionally prepare themselves for the possibility of incarceration, as their case will be heard before Judge Hehir on September 27. Last week, Judge Hehir sentenced five JSO activists to prison terms of up to five years for similar offenses. Holland’s legal representative stated, “The government has shown no intent to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and instead focuses on prosecuting young activists who are working to secure a sustainable future for themselves and their descendants.”

In recent times, activists representing different nations have employed art as a means to bring attention to the urgent issue of climate change. However, the judicial sentence passed against the JSO could potentially establish an alarming precedent for other like-minded individuals in the future.
