As a fan, I can’t help but admire Colin Jost‘s determination and sense of humor in the face of some less-than-ideal experiences during his stint as a sports reporter for the Olympics. It’s not every day that you get to cover an event like this from the beautiful shores of Tahiti, but it seems that the reef wasn’t too thrilled about Jost’s arrival. I mean, who gets injured before they even start competing, right?
Colin Jost‘s stint as a sports reporter for the 2024 Olympics isn’t going quite as planned.
The writer and performer from Saturday Night Live was selected by NBC to report on the surfing event at the Olympics, which took place in Teahupo’o, Tahiti – a location more than 10,000 miles distant from this year’s main games site in Paris. However, even paradise has its challenges. Yesterday, the comedian posted a picture of his injured foot on Instagram with the caption, “This could potentially lower my WikiFeet rating, but I just arrived in Tahiti for the surfing Olympics, and it seems the reef was eager to welcome me.”
On Mondays post, he showed his wrapped toes one by one and jokingly commented, “Apparently I’ve visited the Olympic medical center more than all the athletes put together.”
On Sunday, I had an exciting chat with Mike Tirico, who was reporting live from Paris about the games. In our conversation, I shared a little mishap that happened to me recently – I got injured while surfing! I managed quite well up until the first wave, but then unfortunately ended up standing on a coral reef. Since I wasn’t wearing protective footwear designed for coral, I sustained some minor scrapes. Despite my injury, I was determined to continue covering the surfing competitions, so I bravely continued my reporting right there on the shoreline, barefoot.
An Olympics clip featured Jost’s surfing journey alongside Team USA surfers Carissa Moore and John John Florence. With a confident tone, Jost remarked, “To be honest, I outperformed them.” The footage displayed him taking a tumble into the water. When Jost inquired about his Olympic score for riding similar waves as the Olympians, Moore responded, “I’d say he earns bonus points for determination.”
