As a long-time fan of Bruce Campbell and his unforgettable portrayal of Ash Williams, I can’t help but feel like I’ve hit the jackpot with this latest news! The man himself has confirmed that not one, but TWO more Evil Dead movies are on their way, and I couldn’t be more excited.
As a dedicated fan, I’m well aware that Bruce Campbell, famously known for his brash and sarcastic portrayal of Ash Williams in the iconic Evil Dead franchise, is never shy about expressing his thoughts, not even when it comes to the groundbreaking horror series Sam Raimi birthed back in 1981. In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, they dared to ask about the future of Evil Dead, and true to form, he didn’t mince words.
The next phase consists of two upcoming films. We currently have two talented directors ready with their fresh screenplays, and we believe we’ve managed to convince a studio to fund both projects, as it appears these ventures are still profitable.
The following two movies were previously announced this year: one directed by Francis Gallupi, known for his work on the successful indie film “The Last Stop in Yuma County,” and the other by Sébastien Vaniček, responsible for the 2024 release “Infested.” These directors are set to bring their unique styles to the “Evil Dead” franchise, creating new characters who may unwittingly find themselves in possession of the Sumerian Book of the Dead, leading to the emergence of a fresh wave of Deadites.
Campbell emphasized that the secret to the franchise’s growth lies in reducing the gap between movie releases, recognizing the dedicated fan base eagerly waiting for more frequent content. The span between Fede Álvarez’s Evil Dead and Lee Cronin’s Evil Dead Rise was 10 years, but Campbell feels that such a long wait is unacceptable considering the low production costs of these films.
As a longtime fan of horror movies, I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised by the success of the “Evil Dead” films, particularly the last one which raked in an impressive $140 million. Growing up, I remember these movies not being big box office hits, but rather cult classics cherished by a dedicated fanbase. However, it seems that times have changed and now these films are making real money.
Although Sam Raimi and Campbell won’t be reprising their roles in live-action form for the Evil Dead franchise immediately, Campbell clarified that he will lend his voice to the cherished character of Ash for the upcoming animated Evil Dead series which is now being developed.
“I’ll do that. I’ll do Ash’s voice all day long, because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.”
Bruce Campbell Is Ready To Get Down With the Devil
Switching from one troublemaker to another, Bruce Campbell is all set to feature in the upcoming Peacock series titled “Hysteria!“. In this show, he assumes the role of a small-town sheriff grappling with a series of murders that occur during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s. This character bears some resemblance to Ash Williams in terms of their shared fish-out-water predicament and need to navigate their way out of it. It was this similarity that initially attracted Campbell to the part.
“You want to put weird sh*t in the hands of someone who can’t handle it. Like with Ash [from
Evil Dead
], he has no formal training whatsoever. He’s not military, he’s not CIA; he’s like a garage mechanic that’s out to save the world. That interests me!”
We’re equally excited about it, eagerly anticipating how he breathes life into his latest character in what seems to be a delightful throwback to the ’80s, offering a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Yet, when you think about it, given recent happenings, it appears that not much has truly changed from those times.
