As a long-time Marvel fan, I couldn’t be more thrilled about Sebastian Stan’s return as Bucky Barnes in “Thunderbolts*”. After all these years, seeing him evolve from a brainwashed assassin to a hero, and now back to his Brooklyn roots, is nothing short of incredible.
Actor Sebastian Stan is indicating a less serious version of character Bucky Barnes compared to how fans knew him during the Winter Soldier period. During his appearance at San Diego Comic Con to promote his role in Marvel’s Thunderbolts, Stan expressed that Bucky has a knack for multiple comebacks and currently finds himself in a more enjoyable situation. The lighter-hearted Bucky played by Stan will help establish a connection to the initial MCU, providing this new team with a strong foundation for future adventures, as the movie is set to release next summer.
Stan’s appearance in the MCU’s “Thunderbolts” film comes as a delightful twist for the 41-year-old actor, who last portrayed Bucky in the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” in 2021. His voice was heard as Bucky in the animated series “What If…?” the previous year, but he believed his time with the character had ended, given Marvel’s focus on new characters in Phase 5. During the “Thunderbolts” panel at Comic Con, he was taken aback to discover that Bucky still holds significance in the latest MCU narratives.
Initially, I didn’t anticipate returning, let alone with this specific team, but the experience has proven to be a remarkable voyage that significantly shaped my personality.
Following a span of thirteen years within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the character of Bucky Barnes portrayed by Stan has experienced quite the tumultuous journey. Initially declared dead at the conclusion of Captain America: The First Avenger, he resurfaced as a menacing, cybernetically-enhanced assassin in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. His actions strained the friendship between Captain America and Iron Man significantly in Captain America: Civil War, before transforming back into a hero in the Avengers films, Infinity War and Endgame. A sense of personal tranquility seemed to be found by Bucky towards the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and in Thunderbolts*, we observe him returning to his carefree, amiable self from Brooklyn, effectively completing his character arc.
In an incredibly enjoyable spot we’ve put him, I believe it’s perfect for him. If you watch the film, we’re quite an unusual group, but he blends perfectly with us.
As a fan, I’m really excited about the prospect of Bucky Barnes being back in high spirits in the upcoming movie, which seems to be drawing comparisons to early buzz surrounding it as Marvel’s equivalent to James Gunn’s DC film “The Suicide Squad.” With its ensemble cast of misfits learning to function together on a challenging mission, this new venture sounds like a more lighthearted take on “The Avengers,” with an edge of defiance.
Who is Appearing in Thunderbolts*?
Thunderbolts* has generated excitement by combining top talent from various Marvel Cinematic Universe movies into a unified squad. Besides Stan, the cast includes David Harbour portraying Alexi/Red Guardian (from Black Widow), Hannah John-Kamen as Ava/Ghost (from Ant-Man and the Wasp), Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent (from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, and Olga Kurylenko as Antonia/Taskmaster – all from Black Widow. Additionally, Julia Louis-Dreyfus takes on the role of Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, while Lewis Pullman is cast as Robert Reynolds/Sentry, who is rumored to be the antagonist in the upcoming film.
At the Comic Con panel, an exclusive first trailer of the upcoming film was screened solely for the attendees, and it hasn’t been made available online yet. This sneak peek showcased a heartwarming reunion between Florence Pugh’s character Yelena and her father, David Harbour’s Alexi. Additionally, other characters such as Bucky, John Walker, Ghost, Taskmaster, and Pullman’s Sentry were depicted, coming together for a perilous mission to capture Sentry.
Title “Thunderbolts” penned by Eric Pearson and Lee Sung Jin, with direction by Jake Schreier, serves as the concluding movie in Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
