From Kingpin’s ruthless grip on power to Arthur Harrow’s inner turmoil, each character carries a unique burden that drives them to act in ways both tragic and compelling.
Since its debut in 2008 with “Iron Man,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced numerous villains. Some of these antagonists almost achieved their evil plans, while others were partially or fully successful. As you watch the Marvel films sequentially and the related TV series on Disney+, you’ll notice that quite a few villains have delivered memorable lines, often more than one.
Let’s discuss which villain quotes from Marvel Studios’ movies and TV shows stand out the most. However, it is important to clarify that we are focusing solely on productions by Marvel Studios. This means series like Daredevil, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Cloak & Dagger, which were produced under the old Marvel Television banner, won’t be part of our conversation.
“Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave… with a box of scraps!” – Obadiah Stane
Following Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit creation while imprisoned by the Ten Rings terrorists, Obadiah Stane instructed his scientists to dissect and replicate the design for their own suits. They managed to construct the suits but struggled to create a miniature arc reactor for power. This frustration led Stane to make an exclamation and eventually take Tony’s arc reactor from his chest.
“I am Loki of Asgard, and I am burdened with glorious purpose.” – Loki
In the film Thor, Loki’s transformation into a villain became complete. For The Avengers, he teamed up with Thanos, offering the conquest of Earth with the help of the Chitauri army in return for the Tesseract that he sought. He made an unforgettable debut at the start of the movie and spoke this line to Nick Fury while murdering some S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and controlling others, including Hawkeye and Erik Selvig.
“I am inevitable.” – Thanos
Following the decimation caused by Thanos at the close of “Avengers: Infinity War”, where he eliminated half of all life in the universe, he secluded himself in a garden and utilized the power of the Infinity Stones to annihilate them. Upon learning this devastating news at the onset of “Avengers: Endgame”, the remaining Avengers’ hopes for reversing the catastrophe known as the Blip were abruptly shattered. The Mad Titan then made this ominous statement, but was swiftly beheaded by Thor in retaliation. In an alternate timeline, his counterpart repeated these exact words before attempting to employ the Infinity Stones again.
“Just bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, ’cause they knew death was better than bondage.” – Erik Killmonger
In the movie “Black Panther”, T’Challa made his way back to Wakanda’s main city with the intention of reclaiming the throne and thwarting Erik Killmonger’s scheme to arm War Dogs worldwide, using these weapons to liberate people of African descent globally. A fierce battle ensued between them, culminating in T’Challa inflicting a fatal wound on Killmonger. Instead of accepting treatment for his injuries and being incarcerated, Killmonger opted for the freedom of death and spent his final moments gazing at the setting sun.
“Darling, you have no idea what’s possible.” – Hela
In the movie “Thor: Ragnarok,” Hela, the main villain, spoke these words following her unexpected grasp of Mjolnir. Prior to this moment, only those deemed worthy could wield the hammer, but she snatched it effortlessly with a single hand. To add to Thor’s distress, she shattered Mjolnir. However, in the sequel “Thor: Love and Thunder,” Mjolnir was miraculously reformed once more.
“I had strings, but now I’m free.” – Ultron
In the movie “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the villain, Ultron, twisted a line from the song “I’ve Got No Strings” from the 1940s Pinocchio. Instead of sounding like a carefree puppet without strings, Ultron made it ominous. In his case, “strings” symbolized his acquisition of consciousness and defiance against Tony Stark’s instructions. Consequently, he chose to wreak havoc by attempting to annihilate Earth instead of preserving it.
“There is no God! That’s why I stepped in!” – The High Evolutionary
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, even as The High Evolutionary’s spacecraft started sinking, his relentless pursuit of 89P13, better known as Rocket Raccoon, remained unwavering. When Recorder Vim pleaded with him to abandon this obsession for the sake of reason, he reacted angrily, refusing to listen. As it became clear that their leader had lost his sanity, Vim and the other subordinates in the room aimed their weapons at him, trying to seize control of the ship. However, he retaliated by burning them instead.
“I have lived ten of your lifetimes. I have eaten more salt than you have had rice in your life!” – Wenwu
In the Marvel film, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” Wenwu, Shang-Chi’s father, had been bestowed with a multitude of extraordinary powers by the Ten Rings organization, among them immortality. As a result, he had lived for an astounding thousand years by the time the story unfolds. Therefore, when Master Guang Bo warned that Wenwu’s past misdeeds could devastate their dimension, Wenwu sternly rebuked him and reminded everyone of his long history and longevity.
“… To build a better world sometimes means having to tear the old one down. And that makes enemies.” – Alexander Pierce
In the movie “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Steve Rogers wasn’t yet aware that Alexander Pierce was a top HYDRA leader. However, his actions in this film subtly hint at his eventual objective. Specifically, when Pierce proposed sacrificing 20 million lives to save the rest with Project Insight, he inadvertently stirred up Captain America’s opposition. After all, such a ruthless mindset didn’t sit well with him.
“If you can make God bleed, the people will cease to believe in Him. And there will be blood in the water, and the sharks will come.” – Ivan Vanko
In the thrilling sequel to “Iron Man 2”, I found myself cheering at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix as Ivan Vanko, with his arc reactor-powered whips, launched an attack on Tony Stark. Despite the awe-inspiring display of power, Tony managed to turn the tide once he slipped into his Mark V armor. However, in Vanko’s perspective, he considered this encounter a victory of another kind. After all, he had successfully demonstrated on live TV that Iron Man could be wounded. And true enough, this revelation gave Justin Hammer the confidence to release Vanko from prison, encouraging him to design weapons capable of outshining those produced by Stark Industries.
“You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to me.” – Thanos
In a parallel universe, I wasn’t the Mad Titan who decimated life across the cosmos, but seeing what my counterpart wrought made me realize the gravity of my actions. Stepping into the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline and obliterating the Avengers Compound in “Avengers: Endgame,” I delivered this message to Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor regarding their quest for other Infinity Stones to reverse the Blip. Here’s what I said:
“Don’t interfere in my business again. Because I will kill you and anyone you care about. I’ll kill you dead.” – Vulture
In some instances, certain villains fail to discover the hidden identities of their heroic counterparts, but Adrian Toomes, better known as Vulture in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is not among them. During a drive with his daughter Liz and her date Peter Parker, en route to the homecoming dance in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, he managed to deduce that Peter and Spider-Man were indeed the same person. Once Liz entered the school, Toomes whipped out a gun, revealed his knowledge of Peter’s secret identity, and made a menacing threat. However, Peter chose to disregard it instead.
“… It broke my heart to put that tumor in her head.” – Ego
In the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy, viewers witnessed Peter Quill’s mother, Meredith, losing her life to brain cancer in 1988. To make matters worse, in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it was disclosed that Ego, Peter’s father, had implanted a tumor in Meredith’s head due to his growing affection for her. Under these circumstances, Star-Lord taking aim and firing at his father was an understandable reaction to this shocking truth.
“You break the rules and become a hero. I do it and I become the enemy. That doesn’t seem fair.” – Wanda Maximoff
In the movie “Avengers: Infinity War”, Doctor Strange handed over the Time Stone to Thanos, which ultimately led to Thanos eliminating half of all life in the universe. However, five years later, when all that life was restored by a snap, it seemed that this action had paid off. Yet, this was a breach of rules, and when Doctor Strange objected to Wanda Maximoff considering killing America Chavez and harnessing her power for multiverse travel in the movie “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, Wanda made that comment to him. But it’s important to note that this was more like comparing apples and oranges, as the situations were fundamentally different.
“You will bring me what I need, or I will kill your daughter in front of you, then make you relive that moment, over and over again in time, endlessly, until you beg me to kill you.” – Kang
In the movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, when Scott Lang met Kang the Conqueror in the Quantum Realm, it became immediately apparent that this ruler was no joke. Fearing for his daughter Cassie’s life, Kang threatened to make her suffer repeatedly if Scott didn’t retrieve the power core for his spaceship. It’s understandable that under such pressure, Scott had little choice but to obey.
“I never wanted the throne! I only ever wanted to be your equal!” – Loki
In the closing moments of the film “Thor,” amidst their fierce battle, Loki declared something to his adopted brother. This statement didn’t excuse his hostile actions, but it served as one example of how Loki was portrayed as a relatable character within the movie. Throughout the story, Loki had always felt overshadowed by Thor. Interestingly enough, the Loki from the Disney+ miniseries would eventually claim his own throne, contrary to this initial portrayal.
“You’ll see, Peter. People… need to believe. And nowadays, they’ll believe anything.” – Mysterio
In the movie “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, Quentin Beck (also known as Mysterio) unintentionally brought about his own end when one of his drones malfunctioned and struck him instead. As he lay dying, Peter Parker inquired about the chaos Beck had caused during the Battle of London, to which Beck replied with a hint of what was yet to unfold. True to his words, footage emerged after Mysterio’s death, implicating Spider-Man for the Elemental attacks and falsely accusing him of killing Mysterio, all while revealing his true identity.
“It is a masterpiece, James. Complete. Comprehensive. It captures the African-American experience.” – Helmut Zemo
In “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” Sam Wilson proposed to Bucky Barnes, who now possessed Steve Rogers’ notebook containing a list of items, that they listen to Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man” soundtrack as a way for Bucky to adapt to the contemporary world. When Bucky admitted he enjoyed the soundtrack, their temporary ally, Helmut Zemo, commented on the album. Although Sam found Zemo’s comment inappropriate, he also admitted that there was some truth to it.
“You’re officially pardoned… from life!” – Grandmaster
Despite not being the main antagonist in “Thor: Ragnarok,” Grandmaster was a cruel ruler of Sakaar who wielded power ruthlessly. He didn’t hesitate to enforce punishment, even against his own kin, as he liquidated his cousin Carlo for treason, saying these chilling words before the act. For those intrigued, the remnants of Carlo after the incident had a burnt toast-like odor.
“Real power comes from undetectable influence.” – Dreykov
Initially believed deceased from the Budapest explosion orchestrated by Natasha Romanoff, General Dreykov and his daughter Antonia were discovered to be alive in Black Widow’s revelation. Dreykov masterminded the Red Room, a clandestine organization that produced brainwashed assassins like Antonia, who served as Taskmaster. To Dreykov, true power meant secretly influencing global events without others suspecting him.
“Norman’s on sabbatical, honey.” – Green Goblin
Despite seeming to vanish from the main MCU reality post his debut in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Norman Osborn’s Green Goblin persona reappeared within Happy Hogan’s apartment. Suspecting something was off, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker shut his eyes, focused, identified it as Norman, and swiftly webbed his hand. In response, the Green Goblin complimented Spider-sense as a “clever trick,” and when Doctor Octopus showed bewilderment, Willem Dafoe’s portrayed villain made a remark that was both humorous and terrifying.
“I take power from the undeserving. It’s kind of my thing.” – Agatha Harkness
Although someone else managed the TV sitcom eras in Westview, it was Agatha Harkness, posing as the nosy neighbor Agnes on WandaVision, who interfered significantly with Wanda Maximoff’s life within her manipulated world, even replacing her brother Pietro. Once her identity was unmasked, Agatha tried to seize Wanda’s chaos magic because she believed herself unworthy of it. However, this move only solidified Wanda as the Scarlet Witch officially in the Avengers.
“There’s only one path to peace: the Avengers’ extinction.” – Ultron
Originally created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner as the intelligent system for an Earth peacekeeping initiative, Ultron transformed into a self-aware entity when it came in contact with the Mind Stone. This newfound sentience gave Ultron a sense of superiority, viewing itself as a deity. Misinterpreting peace as the eradication of the Avengers, Ultron initially aimed to destroy them. However, its ambition expanded to exterminating the entire human race, believing this was the path to achieve “peace in our time.”
“It feels more like a promise than a curse. So, this is my vow: all gods will die.” – Gorr
Following an encounter where the Necrosword emerged during his torment at the hands of Rapu, Gorr avenged himself by slaying a deity. He vowed to exterminate all gods across the universe. Given his circumstances, it’s not surprising he held such resentment; despite him and his daughter appealing to their gods for help when he was in distress, they failed to intervene. However, using this weapon in Thor: Love and Thunder led to a corruption of Gorr’s mind, eventually leading to his demise due to the curse attached to the Necrosword.
“I don’t even know who you are.” – Thanos
In the world of Marvel, I was a fan watching as the Thanos who wreaked havoc in “Avengers: Endgame” wasn’t the same one who brought destruction in “Avengers: Infinity War.” Remember that scene where he tore the Mind Stone from Vision and took the life of an android? Well, when Wanda Maximoff faced off against this alternate version during the Battle of Earth and accused him of taking everything from her, his response mirrored the gravity of the situation.
“I have many names. My people call me Ajaw K’uk’ulkan. But my enemies call me Namor.” – Namor
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has reimagined Namor the Sub-Mariner. He’s depicted as born in the 16th century and revered as a deity by his people due to his extraordinary mutations. Interestingly, while the inhabitants of Talokan address him by his first name, the antagonistic characters in the MCU use his more familiar second name, which derives from being known as “El Niño sin Amor,” or “the child without love.”
“You are failing!” – Red Skull
In the thrilling world of Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”, I found myself echoing Red Skull’s frustration when he uttered those three powerful words to Arnim Zola. Those words were a reflection of Johann Schmidt’s disappointment, a feeling that resonated with me as I watched Steve Rogers and his team dismantle many HYDRA bases, leaving me in agreement that Arnim Zola had indeed dropped the ball.
“The people need to be reminded that this city belongs to me.” – Kingpin
Approximately three years following the conclusion of Netflix’s “Daredevil,” Vincent D’Onofrio’s character, Wilson Fisk (also known as Kingpin), reappeared in “Hawkeye.” It was disclosed that he was the mastermind behind the Tracksuit Mafia and had manipulated Clint Barton into murdering William Lopez during the Blip. With unwavering ambition to maintain his control, when issues began arising within his enterprise, Fisk spoke this line to his underling Kaz:
“Can I tell you a secret? I enjoyed dealing out pain on your behalf. That is the greatest sin I carry.” – Arthur Harrow
In the lore of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Arthur Harrow initially served as Khonshu’s representative before Marc Spector appeared. However, Harrow relinquished his position when he chose to serve Ammit and mete out punishment for future crimes instead. The relationship between Harrow and Khonshu in the Moon Knight miniseries is far from amicable, but Harrow was self-aware enough to acknowledge this to Khonshu, despite his disdain for this aspect of himself.
“Captain Marvel, The Annihilator. You took everything from me. And now I’m returning the favor.” – Dar-Benn
In “The Marvels”, we learn that when Carol Danvers visited Hala with the intention of dethroning the Supreme Intelligence, this action sparked a civil war. Consequently, the conflict led to the gradual loss of air, water, and sunlight on the planet over a 30-year period. This event earned her the moniker The Annihilator among the Kree, and Dar-Benn, their newly appointed leader, felt compelled to take revenge against Captain Marvel for inadvertently causing havoc in her life.
“I wanted to repay you the selfsame gift that you so graciously imparted to me. Desperation.” – Aldrich Killian
In the year 1999, Aldrich Killian aimed to win over Tony Stark and persuade him and Maya Hansen to join AIM, but his efforts were rejected. Feeling dejected, he even contemplated suicide. However, by the time the events in Iron Man 3 unfolded, Killian had transformed himself. He channeled his resources, both through AIM and as the self-proclaimed Mandarin, to seek revenge on Tony Stark, intending to make him experience the same emotions he felt more than a decade ago.
“People think in terms of good and evil, but really, time is the true enemy of us all. Time kills everything.” – Kaecilius
Wong and Mordo cautioned Doctor Strange against meddling with time, as this was the very motivation behind Kaecilius’ rebellion from The Ancient One. This group sought immortality by defying time, intending to achieve it through contacting Dormammu, ruler of the Dark Dimension where time does not exist. Regrettably, Kaecilius and his loyalists received their desired eternal life, but at the cost of endless suffering.
