As a lifelong sports fan with a soft spot for Saturday morning cartoons, I must say that the upcoming animated series “Bronx Buds” by YES Network has me genuinely excited! Growing up, there was nothing quite like waking up early on Saturdays, pouring myself a bowl of cereal, and settling in to watch my favorite shows while my family bonded over shared laughter.
Could an animated show attract new audiences to the complex world of regional sports networks? That’s what the New York Yankees believe. The YES Network, belonging to the Yankees, is debuting its first cartoon series as part of a strategic move to broaden the types of content that a Regional Sports Network (RSN) can offer, and potentially captivate younger viewers.
The program titled “HexClad Presents Bronx Buds” focuses on a local youth baseball team from the Bronx called The Pinstripes. This series will make its debut on Saturday, August 17th, and can be streamed through the YES app. Tzero Studios is responsible for producing this show for YES Network.
As a dedicated enthusiast myself, I’m excited to share that we’re aiming to cultivate the upcoming wave of baseball devotees, according to Jason Feneque, the senior director of distribution and special projects at YES.
According to Justin Shenkarow, founder of TZero Studios, the aim of Bronx Buds was to rekindle some of the enchantment found in old-fashioned Saturday morning cartoons, a custom that seems to have vanished with the arrival of streaming services like Netflix and YouTube.
Shenkarow mentions, “We found ourselves yearning for the old days when Saturday mornings meant waking up, eating cereal, watching cartoons with family, and sharing those special moments. We recognized a fantastic chance to produce an animated series that resonated with sports enthusiasts, as there wasn’t much out there. And let me tell you, we’re passionate about sports, animation, and the Bronx, which is why we wanted to create this show around it.”
The Bronx Buds episodes are approximately 7 minutes long, featuring actual young performers portraying the characters. This aspect was significant for Shenkarow, as he had previously lent his voice to the Nickelodeon show “Hey Arnold!” himself.
He notes, “There’s an honesty about genuine children, along with the variety you find in real kids, combined with the unique sound of New York.”
In a more conversational manner, you could say: Just like the YES app offers content beyond baseball games with features on food and local Bronx businesses, Bronx Buds takes it a step further by delving deeper into this aspect of the Bronx community.
“As you’re aware, many ideas are simply rehashes of previous ones. That’s acceptable, but Shenkarow emphasizes a desire to produce something entirely new. The goal is to appeal to Yankee fans and a wider audience by offering something fresh and groundbreaking from the get-go. Moreover, this project revolves around baseball, exploration, and teamwork among children.”
