Borderlands Boss Teases Hopes for a Cinematic Universe

Borderlands Boss Teases Hopes for a Cinematic Universe

As a long-time fan of the Borderlands series, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming cinematic universe! The prospect of a new franchise, helmed by the visionary Randy Pitchford and directed by the masterful Eli Roth, has me on the edge of my seat. The all-star cast, including legends like Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Kevin Hart, promises an unforgettable experience that will perfectly capture the chaotic, surreal world of Pandora.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but be excited about the upcoming big-screen adaptations for video games, and it looks like Gearbox Studios, led by Randy Pitchford, is cooking up something grand with their new Cinematic Universe. The much-anticipated Borderlands movie will grace theaters this August, boasting an impressive ensemble cast (including Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and others). Unlike the Pandora from Avatar, this one is home to a thrilling chase for a mysterious treasure vault, with a band of gun-wielding adventurers leading the way.

In conversation with GamesRadar+, Randy Pitchford discussed the upcoming film directed by Eli Roth and the possibility of a new cinematic series. Although he emphasized that any potential follow-ups hinge on the success of this initial movie, Pitchford revealed that discussions about future sequels have taken place.

As a longtime fan of the Borderlands franchise, I am beyond excited to share that we are finally moving forward with the next movie adaptation! Having been involved in various aspects of game development and production for years, I can confidently say that this is by far the most ambitious and passionate project I’ve ever been part of. The team assembled for this film is simply incredible – a group of talented individuals who truly understand what makes Borderlands special to its dedicated fanbase.

Why The Borderlands Movie Removed Fan-Favorite Characters

When the first sneak peek for the Borderlands film was released online in March, enthusiasts quickly observed that the movie had undergone significant alterations compared to the video games. Despite the movie seeming to flawlessly portray the eccentric, anarchic essence of the Borderlands series, some key characters were conspicuously missing from the preview. Randy Pitchford addressed this issue, explaining that there was insufficient space in one film to accommodate “all the beloved characters.”

Nevertheless, Pitchford hinted that characters such as Brick and Mordecai might appear in future cinematic outings if the initial movie performs well financially. The chief executive added:

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my heartfelt hope that there will be more than one movie set in the captivating world of Borderlands. However, every journey begins with a single step, and it’s crucial to focus on what we have. Frankly, it’s been challenging for me, as when you discover the narrative that resonates with your soul, you must fully embrace it.

The shift in fortunes for video game adaptations on both large and small screens is evident. Previously, such projects were seen as a jinxed endeavor, but now they have blossomed into a highly profitable market. As per Eli Roth, the upcoming film based on Borderlands could not have a better release time, following the success of recent video game adaptations like HBO’s The Last of Us and Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout.

Borderlands
releases in theaters on August 9, 2024.
