As a seasoned gamer of horror movie lore, I can’t help but feel a wave of nostalgia washed over me by the news of the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” legacy sequel. Growing up, these movies were my gateway drug into the terrifying world of slasher films, and the first one still holds a special place in my heart.

It’s been reported that the new reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” might disregard the storyline of its initial sequel, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” However, the director of the legacy sequel, Jenn Kaytin Robinson, has clarified via X (previously Twitter) that this isn’t accurate. Interestingly, she doesn’t mention the 2006 film “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer,” a direct-to-DVD movie that was not connected to the cast of either of the first two films.

Although the movie “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” was generally criticized and sometimes confusing (even with its title), it looks like the third film in the series will be drawing from its storyline. Given that only the first movie made a significant cultural impact, it’s likely that the sequel set in the Bahamas won’t have as much influence on its overall tone or plot.

A year after the initial film, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” was met with harsh criticism by critics due to its unoriginal fright scenes and peculiar rhythm. Its shortcomings as a follow-up were even more noticeable considering it followed closely on the heels of “Scream 2,” which is often regarded as being just as impressive as the first film in that series. However, it does have its appealing aspects, such as the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., an eccentric early appearance by Jack Black (and a part for Jeffrey Combs from “Re-Animator”).

What Do We Know About the Legacy Sequel?

Without the involvement of Prinze Jr. and Hewitt, a sequel wouldn’t truly be a legacy; fortunately, as reported by Deadline, negotiations for their return are underway. Although they haven’t been confirmed yet, actors like Camila Mendes from Riverdale, Madelyn Cline from Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Jonah Hauer-King from The Little Mermaid, and Sarah Pidgeon from Tiny Beautiful Things are in discussion. The potential release date is set for July 18, 2025.

It appears quite possible that Hewitt might shout at the sky once more, since he’s been involved in discussions about his return. If so, it’s probable that Prinze Jr. will follow suit.

As a die-hard fan, I’m excitedly sharing the news that Prinze Jr. has hinted at possible discussions for a new project. He’s been open about it with US Weekly, stating, “There’s definitely conversation happening,” but he emphasizes that nothing is official yet. The team behind the potential movie seems eager to bring it to life, given the success of recent Scream films.
