As a veteran gamer who’s journeyed through the cosmos of Destiny since its very beginning, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia and trepidation at the news that Destiny 3 might not be on the horizon. The franchise has been a constant companion in my gaming life for a decade, providing countless hours of shared experiences with friends and strangers alike.
In about a month, the popular video game franchise known as Destiny will mark its tenth anniversary. However, following another round of staff reductions at the developer Bungie within the past year, fans are questioning how much longer the series might continue in the future.
Although rumors suggested that Destiny 3 might be underway, according to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, there was indeed a spinoff being developed; however, it wasn’t actually Destiny 3 – and unfortunately, this project has been shelved as well.
Destiny 3 isn’t happening
To set the record straight about recent speculations, it’s important to note that Destiny 3 was never in development, as confirmed by sources close to the matter. Instead, Bungie had briefly explored an offshoot project called Payback, but they ultimately decided to scrap this project some time ago. For additional details, stay tuned for my upcoming report.

On the platform known as X (previously Twitter), I shared the following: “To set the record straight about some rumors circulating, Destiny 3 wasn’t scrapped because it was never in production – according to reliable sources. While Bungie dabbled in a side project called Payback at an early stage, they decided to shelve that quite some time back. I’ll be publishing more details about this tomorrow.”
In contrast to an earlier report from this year, a Reddit account accurately forecasted the introduction of the Prismatic subclass within The Final Shape’s latest expansion. This account also speculated that Destiny 3 is being developed under a different title, but Schreier mentions that it might be another project altogether.
While Schreier hints at sharing a complete account soon, he also mentioned that “Bungie provided feedback to Naughty Dog, which Naughty Dog found incredibly useful when making what seems like a strategic choice not to fully commit to a service-based game,”, possibly alluding to the abandoned Last of Us multiplayer initiative.
Bungie recently unveiled that Destiny 2, under the codename Frontiers, will serve as the next chapter for the series following the post-Final Shapes episodes. However, they’ve yet to disclose any additional details.
