As a gamer who grew up watching Saturday Night Live (SNL), the news of Molly Kearney leaving the show after just two seasons has left me feeling like I’ve lost a beloved character in an RPG. Just when we thought they were here to stay, they decided to level-up and embark on new adventures.
As a devoted fan eagerly anticipating the 50th season of Saturday Night Live in 2024, I’ve learned that NBC’s beloved variety show won’t be graced by the same cast from Season 49. Just a day after Punkie Johnson shared her decision to step away as an SNL cast member starting this fall, another familiar face followed suit – Molly Kearney. There was no hint of resentment in the announcement, instead, they poured out “so much love” for their journey and the incredible people they collaborated with, accompanied by heartwarming photos.
Molly Kearney broke new ground by joining the series prior to Season 48 in 2022, marking themselves as the first openly nonbinary member of Saturday Night Live (SNL). The announcement of their departure was met with heartfelt messages of support from fellow and former cast members. Here’s what some of them had to say:
As a seasoned comedian with a background in improv comedy, I can wholeheartedly say that my time on SNL was nothing short of a dream come true. The two seasons I spent there were filled with laughter, camaraderie, and endless hours of hard work behind the scenes.
In the comments section, Kearney received an abundance of affection from many. Molly Shannon, a fellow resident of Northeast Ohio and SNL legend, posted “What an amazing journey” and “You make Cleveland shine with pride.” Bowen Yang, who recently referred to the show as the most awkward thing in entertainment, wrote “Forever legendary ❤️👏,” while Heidi Gardner expressed “My darling 🩵🩵🩵.” Bobby Moynihan showed his support using emojis with “❤️👏❤️,” and Ego Nwodim declared “I love you my sweetheart ❤️.”
As someone who has spent countless hours scrolling through social media platforms, I can honestly say that not every account catches my attention like Molly Kearney’s does. Her Instagram feed is a breath of fresh air, filled with engaging comments and behind-the-scenes photos that truly give us a glimpse into her life. If you haven’t checked out her account yet, I highly recommend doing so. It’s always a pleasure to see the fun and interesting moments she shares with her followers.

To put it simply, Kearney’s gesture of acknowledging those behind-the-scenes at SNL, along with their former co-stars, seems even more heartwarming to me. Neither their statement nor any of the photos clarify whether they are voluntarily parting ways with Saturday Night Live after only two seasons or if changes in the cast are being made for the upcoming 50th season. The mystery remains as to whether Maya Rudolph is returning due to her role as presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, which is a guest appearance, or if she’s rejoining the cast on a full-time basis.
It’s likely we’ll hear updates on the cast for the next season ahead of time rather than later. It seems almost certain that Kenan Thompson will remain part of the show; a while ago, he mentioned his intention to stay until Season 50, and it’s hard to imagine them letting him go. There were also whispers about SNL possibly wrapping up after its fiftieth season, but I don’t foresee that happening either.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m eagerly waiting for the release of details about shows scheduled to air or return this fall, but what makes Saturday Night Live (SNL) unique is that it’s live and can’t be filmed weeks ahead. So, we might not get definite updates on the cast until around September. Excitingly, Season 50 of SNL will premiere on NBC on Saturday, September 28. If you’re curious about Molly Kearney, you can catch up on both her SNL seasons right now with a Peacock Premium subscription!
