Manoj Bajpayee feels he should have had more scenes in Shah Rukh Khan-Preity Zinta's Veer Zaara: 'More focus is given to the hero and heroine...'

As a dedicated follower of Indian cinema, I have had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable journey of Manoj Bajpayee through his 100 films and counting. His role in Yash Chopra’s Veer Zaara remains etched in my memory, not just for its captivating storyline, but also for the way Manoj breathed life into his character.

Manoj Bajpayee recently marked the 100th film of his career by releasing Bhaiyya Ji. Looking back on his long and illustrious career, he fondly remembered his role in Yash Chopra’s Veer Zaara. Though he felt honored to have worked with such a respected director, he also believed that his character could have been given more attention on screen.

During an interview with Radio Nasha, Manoj Bajpayee talked about his character in Veer Zaara and shared why Yash Chopra chose him to play Zaara’s fiancé. He mentioned that he had a fantastic time working on the movie, pointing out that his filming was completed in only four days – three in Delhi and one in Amritsar. He considered his role as more of a cameo, but underscored the immense respect he received from Yash Chopra and his team. Bajpayee still feels elated about working with such a distinguished director.

As a film enthusiast who has followed the career of Yash Chopra, I can attest to his ability to spot talent and bring out the best in his actors. His straightforward approach to casting is well-documented, and it was no different when he cast me for my role in one of his films. Having seen my work in Pinjar, he felt that I was the perfect fit for the part. It’s a testament to his keen eye for talent, and I am grateful for the opportunity he gave me to work with him on such a memorable project.

Manoj Bajpayee believed that his part in Veer Zaara deserved a longer presence on screen. He argued that while the movie primarily revolves around the central couple, his character’s narrative could have been deepened with extra scenes to emphasize his suffering of betrayal. “I understand that it was a love story and more attention is given to the film’s main characters, but I think there should have been some additional scenes to make my character seem more complex,” he stated.

He pointed out that, considering his character’s fiancé’s ultimate act of betrayal, it would have been useful to add a scene depicting the complete depth of his character’s pain. He hinted at the fact that there was only one instance where his character interacts with Shah Rukh Khan’s character, implying that an additional scene could have provided a more convincing explanation for his role.

In the popular movie Veer-Zaara (2004), Indian military officer Veer Pratap Singh develops feelings for Zaara, a Pakistani woman, despite their contrasting religious backgrounds. Determined to be with her, he journeys to Pakistan only to be betrayed by its authorities and imprisoned for 22 years. Remaining loyal throughout his incarceration, Zaara continues to wait for him. Upon reunion after 22 long years, their love remains unbroken. The film, featuring Rani Mukerji and Amitabh Bachchan in prominent roles, was a blockbuster hit at the box office, ultimately ranking among the highest-grossing Indian films of 2004.
