Eames Institute Transforms '90 Richmond Building Into Industrial Headquarters

As a gamer with a keen eye for design and a soft spot for history, I must say that the transformation of the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity’s headquarters is nothing short of breathtaking! Having spent countless hours immersed in virtual worlds, I can truly appreciate the intricate details and harmonious blend of old and new elements that this physical space offers.

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, a dedicated non-profit organization preserving the extraordinary design legacy of Ray and Charles Eames, has metamorphosed an industrial building in Richmond, California, into its main hub. This transformative project now houses our 40,000-piece archive, a testament to their genius. The Institute’s new space is an evolution from our initial venture, the Eames Archive, which was the organization’s first public space and a veritable goldmine for design enthusiasts like myself.

“The space initially served as a cluster of cramped, antiquated offices for medical device production. This is according to the Eames Institute’s statement. Originally designed by architect Jim Jennings in 1997, this building holds significant design history for the Eames Institute, as they were introduced to it by William Stout, a well-respected figure from the renowned San Francisco bookstore, William Stout Architecture Books.”

The renovation process kicked off in 2022 as the organization sketched a blueprint for an office accommodating tasks requiring deep focus as well as social and collaborative activities. Over the subsequent year, Eames’ in-house design team successfully achieved this balance by incorporating both vintage and modern design elements throughout the versatile space spanning two floors.

Distinctive elements in this design are pieces of furniture designed by Ray and Charles Eames, lighting by Isamu Noguchi, wallpaper and rugs by Alexander Girard for Maharam, as well as artworks from artists such as Nicholas Calcott, Josh Cochran, Adrianna Glaviano, and numerous others.
