Star Trek's Kate Mulgrew Explains Why She's Down For A Key Prodigy Romance But Didn't Want Janeway And Chakotay To Hook Up

As a seasoned Star Trek fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The unexpected twist of Gwyn captaining the Protostar and Dal stepping down to be her First Officer was a bold move, one that I initially found intriguing but also had me wondering how their new dynamic would play out, especially given their shared kiss in Season 1.

In the second season of “Star Trek: Prodigy,” there are numerous aspects that I find captivating. The surprise twist where Gwyn takes command of the new Protostar, with Dal graciously relinquishing his position to be her First Officer, is one of my favorites. This move by the main character was both wise and intriguing, leading me to ponder how their relationship dynamic would evolve, given the passionate kiss they shared in Season 1. It’s fascinating to learn that Kate Mulgrew, who portrayed Captain Kathryn Janeway, is open to the possibility of a romantic connection between Dal and Gwyn, despite her initial reluctance to see a romance between Janeway and Chakotay on “Voyager.”

At San Diego Comic-Con, I had conversations with Katee Sackhoff (Gwyn), Brett Gray, and the Hageman brothers about potential complications in a romantic relationship between Gwyn and Dal, considering their new professional dynamic. Since Roxanne Dawson, also known as Katherine Janeway from “Voyager,” is renowned for her stance against romantic entanglements for her character, I specifically asked her opinion. During the original series, she significantly influenced the storyline between Janeway and Chakotay, which led to an emotional revelation where their bond transcended romance, though some were disappointed they didn’t end up as a couple. Interestingly, Dawson shares different sentiments about how Dal and Gwyn’s relationship unfolds compared to that of Chakotay and Janeway.

1. In the narrative, I was the initial female commander, never would I have uttered such a phrase like, “Chakotay in my office for a private chat.” It’s accurate within this tale, it’s fitting here, not part of my story. I believe the dynamic between those two characters is captivating as long as you [looking at Kevin and Dan Hageman] maintain that tension.

Kate Mulgrew points out that the relationship between Dal and Gwyn in Star Trek: Prodigy is authentic, as she suggests they had a prior friendship before joining Starfleet, unlike Captain Janeway and Commander Chakotay who formed their bond when she was his superior officer on the Voyager. This allowed them to develop a deep and professional relationship similar to other past Captains and First Officers, but it wasn’t necessary for them to be romantically involved simply because they are of opposite genders.

Wil Wheaton opened up to TopMob about Wesley’s return in Star Trek: Prodigy.

In my anticipation, I believed that when the trailer for “Prodigy” Season 2 came out, Gwyn’s prominent role would hint at some clarification regarding her and Dal’s relationship status. Regrettably, Dal mentioned their kiss only once, and due to a disruption in their communication, it remains uncertain whether Gwyn picked up on the question about whether they were romantically involved. Fingers crossed that fans of “Star Trek” heed the advice of the “Prodigy” creators and support the show for a potential Season 3 renewal, which might eventually provide answers to those lingering romance questions.

Currently, Season 3 of “Prodigy” isn’t yet scheduled among the upcoming “Trek” series in production. However, being a firm advocate who deemed it the most engaging serialized tale in the franchise, I can only hope for more. I eagerly anticipate where this crew will journey on future missions now that they’ve joined Starfleet. Plus, like many others, I’m hoping for a potential relationship between Dal and Gwyn, and I’m excited to see what’s in store for the characters.

Watch “Star Trek: Prodigy” on Netflix right now, while eagerly waiting for updates about a potential Season 3. In the interim, don’t forget to explore the upcoming 2024 television lineup for sneak peeks of fresh series coming soon.
