Zack Snyder Reacts to Henry Cavill's Deadpool & Wolverine Cameo

As a seasoned cinephile with decades of film-watching under my belt, I must admit that Zack Snyder’s reaction to Henry Cavill’s cameo as Wolverine in Deadpool & Wolverine left me somewhat perplexed. Having directed Cavill in three outings as Superman, one would expect a more enthusiastic response from the director, especially given their shared history in the DC universe.

Zack Snyder, who directed Henry Cavill in three of his Superman films, has commented on the actor’s surprise appearance as a Wolverine character in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. Despite having the opportunity to share his thoughts on Cavill due to their past collaborations, Snyder appears not to have hastened to watch Cavill’s recent blockbuster performance yet.

During a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder talked about his just-released Director’s Cuts for the two Rebel Moon films, now streaming on Netflix. Unsurprisingly, various topics were brought up for discussion, and Henry Cavill’s amusing but frustratingly brief appearance in the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film was one of them. Yet, when asked about his thoughts on Cavill’s cameo, Snyder responded rather soberingly:

I haven’t seen it yet, but I did hear about it. Sounds fun.

Despite being a very occupied individual, many fans are eager for Snyder’s opinion on Cavill’s recent “crossing-the-floor” moment, given his long association with playing Superman in Snyder’s DC universe. This interest is heightened when Reynolds’ character suggests that Marvel Studios might treat Cavill better than the studio he’s referring to (presumably DC). Regarding Reynold’s humorous remark, Snyder didn’t respond directly, but instead gave a thoughtful smile to the interviewer.

Reflecting on the casting decisions made years back, I was recently asked about Henry Cavill as Superman. Naturally, the question also included if I thought he was the ideal choice for the iconic role. Without hesitation, I expressed that yes, indeed, he fit the part perfectly, just as one might expect given his exceptional abilities and fitting physicality for the Man of Steel.

I must say, Henry is nothing short of a superhero in my book! Having had the pleasure of hiring him, I can attest to his extraordinary abilities. In retrospect, I wished I could have had more of him on board, as any leftover tasks were a missed opportunity for his exceptional skills. To put it simply, if I could clone Henry and fill my team with numerous copies of him, I would! His dedication and competence are qualities that every organization should strive to cultivate in their workforce.

Fans Have Wanted to See Henry Cavill Play Wolverine for Years

In comic book circles, numerous fans have cast their favorite actors for iconic characters, and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine seems like a permanent role until his demise (at least as per Deadpool). However, over the past decade, many other talented actors have been suggested to play these roles. One of those frequently mentioned is Cavill.

In my viewpoint as a movie critic, it appeared that, similar to the odds of him landing the James Bond role, the moment for our beloved actor to embody such a character seemed to have slipped away. However, the emergence of “Deadpool & Wolverine” turned this notion on its head in a heartbeat. Akin to several scenes and surprise appearances within the movie, Cavill’s presence in the film caters primarily to fans who eagerly anticipate a smorgasbord of comic book references, iconic moments, and high-profile cameos.

Although not everyone was satisfied with this method – notably those skeptics seeking a touch more complexity in a Deadpool film – the public’s preference has catapulted Deadpool & Wolverine to become the largest Marvel movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home, and one of the most successful films of 2024.
