Eddie Huang, Raoul Peck, Steve Pink Films Join Docs Lineup at Toronto Film Fest

As a gamer with a keen interest in documentaries and a soft spot for tales of resilience and transformation, I can hardly contain my excitement as I delve into this tantalizing lineup for the 2024 Toronto Film Festival’s TIFF Docs sidebar!

Eddie Huang, the mastermind behind ABC’s comedy series “Fresh Off the Boat,” will kick off the Toronto Film Festival’s TIFF Docs segment with a world premiere for “Vice is Broke.” This documentary offers an insightful look into the journey and eventual decline of Vice Media.

Huang plans to recount the series of events that ultimately resulted in Shane Smith’s Vice Media, a formerly influential media entity once estimated at $5.7 billion, seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and initiating a potential sale in 2023.

Additionally, the Toronto documentary strand features several films, including “Blue Road – The Edna O’Brien Story,” directed by Sinéad O’Shea, who spent countless hours interviewing the renowned Irish author during her final year; “Screwball” documentarian Jen Gaiten and Billy Corben present “Men of War,” a documentary about a former U.S. Green Beret entangled in the unsuccessful 2020 attempt to oust Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro; and Steve Pink’s “The Last Republican,” which focuses on former Republican Representative Adam Kinzinger, who went against his party by rejecting Donald Trump.

Additionally, there are debut presentations for Marah Strauch and Bryce Leavitt’s “Space Cowboy,” a movie delving into the realm of daredevil skydiving and innovative aerial cinematography; Joanne Robertson and Neil Diamond’s “So Surreal: Behind the Masks,” which puts a spotlight on the endeavor to return cultural artifacts to the Yup’ik and Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw tribes; and Halima Elkhatabi’s “Living Together,” a film that documents apartment hunters in Montreal as they search for the perfect roommate.

Additionally, there are first-time showings for Ted Passon’s film titled “Patrice: The Movi“; Lina Vdovîi and Radu Ciorniciuc’s production named “Tata“, which follows co-director Vdovîi in her attempt to mend her strained relationship with her father; Anastasiia Bortuali’s movie “Temporary Shelter“, focusing on Ukrainian refugees creating a new life in Iceland following the 2022 Russian invasion of their homeland; Santiago Esteinou’s offering “The Freedom of Fierro“; Sue Kim, director of “The Speed Cubers“, presents her latest documentary “The Last of the Sea Women“, exploring the lives of elderly female free divers; and Ali Weinstein’s production titled “Your Tomorrow.”

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the TIFF Doc program has secured 21 titles from 24 different countries for its lineup, many of which are highly anticipated sales titles. One title that caught my eye is Raoul Peck’s latest work, “Ernest Cole: Lost and Found,” which had its premiere at Cannes and offers a captivating portrayal of the life of a groundbreaking Black freelance photographer in South Africa. Interestingly, Peck premiered his James Baldwin documentary, “I Am Not Your Negro,” at TIFF back in 2016.

As a gamer, I’m thrilled that Toronto is premiering the Canadian debut of the film “No Other Land“. This powerful documentary, created by directors Basel Adra, a passionate young Palestinian activist, and Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist, has stirred controversy following their award-winning speech at the Berlin Film Festival. The duo faced intense backlash for their moving acceptance speech about the Israeli government’s efforts to displace Palestinians from the West Bank.

Toronto previously announced that documentaries such as “Elton John: Never Too Late” by R.J. Culter and David Furnish, “Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe” by Cosima Spender, and “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band” by Thom Zimny will be featured in the 2024 event elsewhere.
