NY Film Festival Sets Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ as Spotlight Gala Selection

As a seasoned gamer and cinephile with over three decades of immersion in both virtual and real-world storytelling, I eagerly anticipate the upcoming premiere of Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” at the 2024 New York Film Festival. Having grown up on the vivid narratives spun by William S. Burroughs, the prospect of seeing his seminal work brought to life by a director like Guadagnino is nothing short of exhilarating.

The 2024 New York Film Festival has chosen Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” as its main event screening for the Spotlight gala, and the U.S. debut of the movie adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel with the same title is scheduled for October 6th.

The movie, penned by Justin Kuritzkes – a collaborator of Guadagnino’s previous work “Challengers” – stars Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville, Michael Borremans, Andra Ursuta, and David Lowery. This production, named Fremantle, was jointly produced by The Apartment, Frenesy film company, Fremantle North America, Cinecittà Spa, and Frame by Frame.

In the movie, I step into the shoes of Burroughs’ alternate persona, a chronic heroin user named William Lee. During my time among gay American expats in Mexico City in the late ’40s, I found myself smitten and embarked on a romantic journey with the preppy, former military man, Eugene Allerton, portrayed by Starkey.

The movie features a score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.

“Dennis Lim, the artistic director of the New York Film Festival, praised Luca Guadagnino as a highly adaptable and daring director in modern cinema. He stated that ‘Queer’ is Luca’s boldest, most innovative, and most unexpected work yet, which vividly portrays its subculture and offers Daniel Craig an unforgettable role of a lifetime.”

Guadagnino expressed, “I feel incredibly fortunate and thrilled to showcase my third film at NYFF, specifically Queer. This is a deeply personal project that explores the universal quest for recognition in someone else’s eyes, using the powerful perspective of William Burroughs.”

The upcoming 62nd New York Film Festival, organized by Film at Lincoln Center, will take place from September 27th to October 14th.
