‘Yellowstone’ and What We Know About the Spinoffs

‘Yellowstone’ and What We Know About the Spinoffs

As a longtime fan of gripping Western dramas, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming spinoffs from Yellowstone. Having grown up watching the majestic landscapes and intricate family dynamics unfold on screen, I feel like I’ve journeyed alongside the Duttons through their trials and triumphs.

Yellowstone, the popular series featuring Kevin Costner, is preparing to ride off into the sunset, with its final episodes airing in November. However, the world of Yellowstone continues to thrive and prosper.

After the achievement of the prequel to Yellowstone, titled 1883, its creator, Taylor Sheridan, has ventured further back in the Dutton family history, giving birth to 1923. This production was renewed for a second season in early 2023 and is currently being filmed.

Despite a writers’ and actors’ strike in Hollywood temporarily halting productions for shows like “Yellowstone” and “1923”, once the strike ended, work recommenced. To everyone’s delight, Paramount Network announced that the Dutton sagas were back on schedule and, even more excitingly, the franchise is planning to expand with three additional spin-offs.

Here, “The Hollywood Reporter” gathers together all shows within the “Yellowstone” universe. This article was initially published on January 14th and has been updated as new details emerge.

    Yellowstone (5 seasons)

The original hit TV series airing on Paramount Network, which kick-started everything, premiered in 2018 and is set to air its fifth and concluding season on November 10th.

The family drama set on a cattle ranch, once led by Kevin Costner, has consistently expanded its viewer base from season to season. The debut of part one in season five shattered ratings records and marked the largest overnight series premiere to date.

Following a dispute over filming dates that caused production delays, Paramount Network announced that the highly successful series would conclude with its fifth season. After much anticipation, Costner officially confirmed his exit from the show this summer. Although it remains to be seen how Sheridan will handle Costner’s departure in the script, viewers will need to watch the series return to discover how they write him out, given the suspenseful cliffhanger ending from its midseason finale.

Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Luke Grimes, Cole Hauser and Kelsey Asbille co-star.

Due to a prior licensing agreement that was established before the Viacom-CBS merger, the show “Yellowstone” is currently streaming exclusively on Peacock (which is owned by NBCUniversal and can’t be found on Paramount+ where the prequels are available; here’s how you can watch it). To expand its viewership and keep fans engaged while they wait for new episodes, CBS has been rebroadcasting the entire series on Sunday evenings.

    1883 (1 season)

‘Yellowstone’ and What We Know About the Spinoffs

Last December, I got hooked on “1883,” which initially premiered on Paramount+ and later moved to the Paramount Network for a complete season run during the summer. As a fan of “Yellowstone,” I was thrilled to explore this prequel series narrated by Isabel May. Alongside Sam Elliott, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw, she embarked on an epic 19th-century wagon trail journey across the country, eventually establishing what would evolve into the Yellowstone Ranch depicted in the main series.

    1. The series on Paramount+ was incredibly successful from its debut, causing the network to commission additional episodes for the limited series and kickstarting the franchise’s growth into the upcoming show 1923. After a year of streaming on Paramount+, the premiere on the Paramount Network attracted nearly 5 million viewers after an episode of Yellowstone, setting a record for the channel. In June 2023, the Paramount Network re-aired the series weekly as part of its simultaneous strikes.

    1923 (1 season; renewed for season 2)

‘Yellowstone’ and What We Know About the Spinoffs

Starting where the first Yellowstone prequel ended in 1883, the second prequel series titled 1923 continues the Dutton family story by focusing on older generations, portrayed by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as the main characters.

Creator Sheridan explained of his decision to jump the series to the year 1923: “I chose that moment in time to peek back in because you’re seeing the children that we’ve met in 1883 attempting to raise another generation of Dutton.” The saga ended on a cliffhanger focused around the emerging main character of the series played by Brandon Sklenar and was quickly renewed for a second season. The early 20th century drama’s premiere became the most-watched series premiere on cable in 2022.

Production is currently underway, but a premiere date has yet to be announced.

The Madison (formerly 2024; 1 season ordered)

‘Yellowstone’ and What We Know About the Spinoffs

As a dedicated fan of Western dramas, having grown up watching classic shows like “Gunsmoke” and “Bonanza,” I was thrilled to learn that Paramount Network has set the stage for not one, but two spinoffs of the popular series “Yellowstone.” Having followed the Dutton family’s saga through thick and thin, it’s exciting to know that there will be more adventures to come in a sequel titled “2024,” with a storyline that takes place after the events of the original show. As someone who has always appreciated well-crafted stories that delve deep into the complexities of family dynamics and the challenges faced by those who live on the frontier, I’m eagerly anticipating the continuation of the Dutton family dynasty with new characters and locations, as well as some familiar faces. With a straight-to-series order for “2024” and plans to stream on Paramount+, it looks like we’ll be able to catch up with the Duttons soon enough. I can hardly wait!

Initially, there were discussions about Matthew McConaughey playing a role in the series, which was widely publicized at the start of the Costner dispute. Nevertheless, no agreement regarding his participation was ever made public.

Now, the series is starting to crystallize: It’s been renamed “The Madison” and stars Michelle Pfeiffer. The esteemed actress nominated for an Oscar will also serve as executive producer for the sequel series from franchise head Sheridan. “Madison” will be the next show to debut in the universe of “Yellowstone.”

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “In the heart of Montana’s Madison River valley, I found myself immersed in a deeply moving tale about grief and human bonding, following the lives of a New York family transplanted there.”

    1944 (1 season ordered)

‘Yellowstone’ and What We Know About the Spinoffs

The second spin-off that’s been revealed is another prequel, this time taking place in 1944, which will continue in the footsteps of both ‘1883’ and ‘1923’. At present, specific details about this series are limited. Sheridan, a co-creator of ‘Yellowstone’ alongside John Linson and the franchise showrunner, hinted at several prequel concepts in a June cover story for The Hollywood Reporter. However, it is ‘1944’ that has been given the go-ahead first.

In line with the past series, the spin-offs will be created by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, as before.

  • 6666 (on hold)

Sheridan has temporarily halted production on the spinoff series that was planned to feature actor Jefferson White, who plays Jimmy in Yellowstone. This decision stems from Sheridan’s recent purchase of the Four Sixes ranch, where the show was supposed to be filmed. It’s important to note that while the ranch depicted in Yellowstone is fictional, the Four Sixes ranch (known as the 6666 Ranch in the series) is a real property. Sheridan expressed this need for extra care due to the ranch being a genuine location with actual families living and working there. He asked for patience from the studio, explaining that one must respect the lineage of such a place. This information was shared in the cover story of The Hollywood Reporter.
