As a dedicated Ted Lasso fan who has spent countless hours immersed in the charming world of AFC Richmond, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and concern regarding the potential return of our beloved series. While I eagerly await any news about season four, I also understand the personal sacrifices Jason Sudeikis has to make for the show, especially considering his young children and the long stints in England that the production demands.
Although the fate of “Ted Lasso” hasn’t been definitively decided yet, it ultimately rests with Jason Sudeikis.
Over a year has passed since the award-winning television series aired its third season and what appeared to be its final episode, but both dedicated viewers and the show’s co-creator, Bill Lawrence, are well aware that nothing can be ruled out.
“Sometimes a shared consensus develops among team members, even without explicit discussions, as was the case with everyone involved in that show – actors, actresses, writers, producers. We didn’t convene to decide on the message; instead, we all cherished the experience. As viewers, we’d be thrilled if the series returned, but we all agree: whatever Jason wants to do next and whatever his decision is, we’re all ready to support it.” (Paraphrased from Collider’s interview with Lawrence about the potential future of the show)
The sports comedy-drama centered around Sudeikis’ character, Ted Lasso – a former American college football coach who found himself in charge of AFC Richmond, a flagging soccer team in the English Premier League, with Sudeikis taking on the roles of both lead actor and head writer, as well as co-creator.
While Lawrence is ready to resume work whenever Sudeikis signals the go-ahead, he is mindful of the individual compromises Sudeikis might need to make for the show, particularly considering the two children he co-parents with his former partner, Olivia Wilde.
“He’s not just the leading actor; he’s also the chief scriptwriter and is about to undergo a major life change, including relocating to a foreign country with kids. This is a significant shift, so as a supporter, I get excited at the thought of another repeat performance. As a companion, I’m ready to support him in whatever decision he makes.”
It seemed that many of the actors and team members shared this same feeling. Last year, Declan Lowney, director of the season three finale, expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that they wished they could carry on with the series, but the emotional toll it took on everyone was too high.
“Lowney explained, ‘Each season feels like a year in England, meaning they’re away from their loved ones.’ This has been quite challenging over the past three and a half to four years. I believe it could have continued, but it served its purpose – the three-season structure was the plan, what Sudeikis desired. However, I sense there’s more to come… other projects will emerge.”
Originally planned as a three-season series, Ted Lasso surpassed expectations on Apple TV+, leading viewers to speculate about additional episodes. Previously, creator Lawrence has hinted that there might be further stories untold, even suggesting the possibility of spinoffs.
