As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the magical world of Oz, I can confidently say that Ariana Grande‘s portrayal of Glinda in the upcoming Wicked movie is set to be a game-changer. Her ability to handle those spicy wings with grace and charm was reminiscent of Glinda’s own ability to keep her cool amidst any storm.
Ariana Grande recently stopped by the set of Hot Ones to discuss her latest projects: her seventh album “Eternal Sunshine” and her role in the upcoming movie version of Wicked. She also bravely faced a series of progressively spicy chicken wings. Her ability to munch through each one, maintaining her poise and allure, was nothing short of enchanting – perhaps because she embodies Glinda, after all.
Ariana Grande Talks Singing Live on Set While Crushing Hot Wings
Beginning November 22, 2024, the highly anticipated film Wicked will hit theaters. This production is a prequel to L. Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, focusing on the untold story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda the Good Witch. The musical first premiered at the Curran Theater in San Francisco on June 10, 2003, and made its Broadway debut on Halloween of the same year. The original production was a huge success, winning three Tony awards and a Grammy for the original cast recording. Despite a brief pause in 2020 due to the pandemic, it has been continuously produced since its premiere.
In this upcoming screen adaptation, the iconic roles of Elphaba and Glinda (previously portrayed by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth on stage) will be brought to life by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Notably, Jon Chu is directing this production, a seasoned professional known for bringing music to the big screen. His impressive portfolio includes ‘Step Up 2: The Streets’, the ‘Never Say Never’ and ‘Believe’ documentaries about Justin Bieber, ‘Jem and the Holograms’, and the movie adaptation of Lin Manuel-Miranda’s ‘In the Heights’.
Throughout the production process, Chu aimed to incorporate as many tangible aspects as feasible, including the vocal components. In an interview with Vanity Fair, he recalled the girls saying, “We’re going live,” during filming.
Ariana Grande recounted her thrilling experience performing live while filming ‘Wicked’ on the show ‘Hot Ones’. She shared that she wasn’t secured with a harness during some high-flying bubble singing scenes. She admired Cynthia Erivo’s incredible acrobatic singing performances, particularly her flips and flying stunts while singing “Defying Gravity”. Grande expressed her profound respect for Erivo, stating that watching her was the most extraordinary thing she had ever witnessed. She also mentioned the challenging and enjoyable tasks they undertook during the filming, concluding that it was an unforgettable experience.
Should just a hint of that intensity and zeal manifest on-screen, it promises an unforgettable cinematic experience when Wicked premieres in theaters nationwide on September 22. Meanwhile, don’t forget to stream episodes of Hot Ones on Peacock.
