Marvel Zombies Reveals How Many Episodes Are in the Series

As a seasoned film enthusiast who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic universes, I must say that the recent announcements about Marvel Zombies have me positively giddy with excitement! Ever since my first encounter with the undead Avengers back in the comic books, I’ve been hooked on this unique take on the Marvel universe.

At D23, updates were announced for the popular Marvel Zombies storyline. Originally introduced in the Ultimate Fantastic Four comic book series, Marvel Zombies grew into a standalone story for Marvel Comics, receiving praise with a successful miniseries from 2005 to 2006 and leading to various sequels, spin-offs, and merchandise. Fans were initially introduced to Marvel Zombies in the first season of “What If…?”, titled “What If… Zombies?!”, on September 8, 2021. Excitingly, Marvel Zombies was officially confirmed as its own animated series in development at Disney+ Day on November 2021.

At the Marvel Animations session during D23 on Saturday, it was officially announced that the Marvel Zombies will be a four-part series rated TV-MA (according to Empire Magazine). Moreover, this series serves as a continuation of the What If…? episode, featuring a sneak peek where Shang-Chi, Wenwu, and Katy battle against hordes of zombies with the assistance of the Ten Rings. The clip then skips forward five years into a post-apocalyptic timeline.

In this film, we get a closer look at Shang-Chi’s storyline. After being bitten by a zombie, he was rescued from certain death when his father, Wenwu, handed him the Ten Rings to ward off the infection. Previously seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp, as well as WandaVision, characters like Shang-Chi, Katy, and FBI agent Jimmy Woo join forces to battle a ferocious Skrull Biker Gang reminiscent of Mad Max. During the D23 Marvel Animation event, Bryan Andrews appeared on stage and shared that there’s a strong affection for zombies among the team, including Brad [Winderbaum] and Kevin [Feige].

Marvel Zombies Will Rise Again

The news that Shang-Chi will significantly contribute to the Marvel Zombies storyline follows the announcement that he will feature prominently in What If…? Season 3. Interestingly, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings premiered in theaters at around the same time as What If…? Season 1, with the Marvel Zombies-themed episode debuting mere days after the film’s release. Although a sequel to Shang-Chi hasn’t been announced yet, it appears that he will play a pivotal role in the franchise’s future, including its animated adaptations.

The Marvel Zombies series will introduce a host of characters from Phases 4 and 5, as several heroes from the Infinity Saga were turned into zombies in the “What If…?” episode. Previously confirmed at D23, Ms. Marvel will make an appearance with Iman Villani reprising her role. Moreover, characters from Eternals, Hawkeye’s Kate Bishop, and various Thunderbolts members such as Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, and Ghost are also expected to feature in this series.

As a dedicated Marvel fan, I’m excitedly anticipating the release of “Marvel Zombies,” though no official premiere date has been announced yet. Given that Marvel successfully capitalized on the Halloween season with “Werewolf by Night” in October 2022 and “Agatha All Along” airing from September 18, 2024, to October, it seems plausible that Marvel might delay the release of “Marvel Zombies” until 2025. This strategic move could make “Marvel Zombies” Marvel’s 2025 Halloween event, with four episodes airing through October, culminating in the final episode just before Halloween. Fingers crossed!
