Alien: Romulus Director Reveals Harsh Note He Got From Ridley Scott: 'Dont F*ck It Up'

As a lifelong fan of the Alien franchise, I am beyond excited for Alien: Romulus! The fact that Ridley Scott, the director of the original film, has given his seal of approval to Fede Álvarez’s work is nothing short of thrilling. It’s like getting a personal invitation to a xenomorph-infested party from the man himself!

The upcoming film titled “Alien: Romulus” is just around the corner, and director Fede Álvarez has been sharing some valuable insights he received from legendary director Ridley Scott before filming began. Scott was responsible for directing the first movie in the Alien series way back in 1979, and later returned to direct both Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017). In his role as a producer for the new movie, Scott collaborated extensively with Álvarez to help bring the director’s vision to fruition. This collaboration is anticipated to result in a chilling new installment in the enduring franchise, which currently consists of seven main movies and two spin-offs.

Alvarez’s upcoming film represents the first installment of the series in seven years, and it takes place between the stories told in “Alien” (1979) and “Aliens” (1986). Alvarez is one of several directors who have worked on this franchise, including Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher, and Paul W.S. Anderson. While the series took a more philosophical approach with “Prometheus” in 2012, Alvarez’s movie aims to return the franchise to its horror origins – something that longtime fans have been eagerly anticipating.

Ridley Scott Has Already Seen Alien: Romulus

Initially planned for a Hulu original movie, similar to the latest Predator installment in 2022, the film Romulus was unexpectedly moved to a theatrical release at the last moment. Although no explicit explanation was provided for this shift, it’s speculated that the success of Prey on streaming platforms may have influenced Disney to try Romulus in cinemas. The risk could potentially yield significant rewards, as experts predict that Álvarez’s film could earn approximately $50 million during its opening weekend, which is $10 million more than Covenant managed in 2017.

While the rest of us are eagerly anticipating its release, it’s been disclosed that Scott has already watched the upcoming movie. Álvarez shared this information, mentioning that he has given his endorsement to the film, which was a relief for the director of “Evil Dead” who was anxiously waiting for his feedback. In late 2023, Álvarez had a conversation with Guillermo del Toro at the DGA Latino Summit 2023, where he revealed that Scott had viewed an early version of the film. Afterward, Álvarez told him, “Fede, what can I say? It’s fantastic.”

It’s clear that Scott highly recommends Romulus, and I’m excited about its release this weekend! Since Scott seems to approve, I’m optimistic that many of us will feel the same way, which could encourage more directors to create similar films combining mythology and horror. This would be great for the franchise, as it could extend its longevity into the future.

20th Century Studios’ movie titled “Romulus,” an alien story, will be available nationwide starting August 16. You can preview the trailer right here!
