Theo James Gets Bloody in Neon’s ‘The Monkey’ Teaser From ‘Longlegs’ Director Osgood Perkins

As a seasoned gamer and avid horror movie enthusiast with a soft spot for twisted tales, I can hardly contain my excitement over Neon’s upcoming offering, “The Monkey.” With a stellar cast led by Theo James and Tatiana Maslany, the film promises to be a chilling ride that treads on the dark side of Stephen King’s imagination.

Neon Capitalizes on the Momentum of Its Latest Success by Announcing Director Osgood Perkins‘ Upcoming Venture as a First Look.

I got a sneak peek at the chilling first teaser for “The Monkey” that Neon dropped on Monday, setting the stage for its spine-tingling release in theaters on February 21, 2025. This trailer stars Theo James, who joins forces with an impressive cast including Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, Rohan Campbell and Sarah Levy. I can hardly wait to see this horror movie unfold on the big screen!

In a short clip, a toy monkey appears to be playing a snare drum, but then the scene abruptly changes to show both the drum and James covered in blood. The background music has a carnival atmosphere.

As a gamer, I found myself immersed in a tale that revolves around twin characters, Bill and Hal, portrayed by the talented James. Our journey starts when we stumble upon our father’s mysterious monkey toy hidden away in the attic. This seemingly innocuous discovery sets off a chilling series of gruesome events.

In 1980, a short story titled “The Monkey” by Stephen King was first released. This tale served as the foundation for the film of the same name, which was written and directed by Perkins. The production of this movie was overseen by Dave Caplan, Michael Clear, Chris Ferguson, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and James Wan.

James has recently been credited for his appearances in the shows “The Gentlemen” and “The White Lotus”, as well as providing voice work for “X-Men ’97”.

Perkins is basking in the triumph of “Longlegs,” a genre movie featuring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, which has been playing in cinemas for a month now and has outperformed “Parasite” as Neon’s highest-earning film to date. In a recent chat with The Hollywood Reporter to publicize “Longlegs,” Perkins hinted that his upcoming project, “The Monkey,” will be funnier than anything he’s done before.

The filmmaker mentioned that the movie seemed reminiscent of films by directors such as John Landis, Joe Dante, or Robert Zemeckis. He recognized an opportunity to create a humorous and absurd comedy dealing with death, finding it amusing, strange, impossible, and surreal that we all must eventually die. Approaching the topic through a tragicomedy perspective felt appropriate because it seemed fitting for the material.

Perkins elaborated, “Ultimately, if you’re looking to minimize it, it falls under the category of haunted or malevolent toy subgenres, and I couldn’t fathom creating a serious piece within that realm. To me, it felt completely inauthentic to tackle it seriously, so I opted for an alternative approach instead.”
