EXCLUSIVE: Zoe Kravitz Opens Up About Her Directorial Debut Blink Twice; Says She Wanted Story To Be ‘Honest And Entertaining'

As a seasoned lifestyle expert with a keen eye for emerging trends and a deep appreciation for the arts, I must say that Zoe Kravitz‘s directorial debut, Blink Twice, has piqued my interest significantly. The psychological thriller, set to release on August 23, 2024, boasts an impressive cast led by Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie, promising a gripping tale of power dynamics and the complexities of human relationships.

On August 23, 2024, Zoe Kravitz’s first directorial effort, titled “Blink Twice,” is slated for release in theaters. The film features Channing Tatum and Naomi Ackie as main characters, with Ackie portraying Frida, a cocktail waitress, and Tatum playing tech billionaire Slater King. This gripping psychological thriller unfolds their complex relationship.

At a charity event, the pair cross paths, and later, Frida receives an invitation from Slater to join him and his companions on a tropical getaway at his private island paradise. The days are filled with sunshine, and the nights are alive with adventure, but then peculiar occurrences begin to unfold.

As I delve deeper into this intriguing mystery, I’m smack in the heart of unsettling revelations. I’m on a mission now, determined to unearth the truth and come out unscathed. Before the movie’s premiere, TopMob had the privilege of chatting with Zoe Kravitz – her initial directorial endeavor – and gained insights into the intricate process behind bringing Blink Twice to life.

Zoe Kravtiz talks about her first ever journey as a director for Blink Twice

In an intimate chat with TopMob, Zoe Kravitz shared insights into her narrative-crafting adventure, delving into her experiences directing films and the concept that sparked the production of Blink Twice.

1. “When you’re young, your perspective is incredibly straightforward. As time passes, things appear less black and white and more nuanced or even idealized,” she noted. “As I transitioned from being a child, an observer, to an adult in these settings, I came to grasp the intricate layers of the situation unfolding.” Kravitz further commented.

Actress who played Batman opened up about discussing sensitive topics with various women, some familiar and others strangers. Unfortunately, they all seem to understand this language due to the risk involved in expressing such thoughts openly. Speaking about them could potentially violate unspoken rules or norms.

Regarding the concept of Blink Twice, Kravitz expressed her desire to delve into a narrative that examines the consequences when women choose to break societal norms and rules.

“What if Eve awoke to find herself questioning – perhaps the Garden of Eden was more myth than reality. And oh dear, this place is far from idyllic. And Adam, it seems you’re not as perfect as they say. Oh, and here’s another thought – this paradise might be an illusion, akin to living in a matrix. And just one more thought – Eve isn’t Eve, she’s Neo; seize that apple, follow the serpent’s guidance, gain that knowledge, and escape from here!” she expressed.

Zoe Kravitz opens up about the creation of Blink Twice: ‘A story about power’

Exploring deeper aspects of the film, the former actress-turned-director revealed that she found the best approach to narrate Blink Twice was by secluding the characters. She likened this setting to that of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, suggesting transforming the ‘garden’ into an isolated island.

After joining Big Little Lies, the actress later revealed that she began writing in the summer of 2017, mainly because she couldn’t believe no one else had tackled the same subject matter yet. However, she added, “There are indeed numerous contemporary stories that delve into similar themes, some of which I adore as movies.”

As the actress carried on crafting her narrative, a series of shocking events surfaced within the entertainment industry, leaving everyone stunned. By October of that very year (2017), Harvey Weinstein was unveiled – oh my! The ensuing public reckoning had commenced, Kravitz reminisced, and she started modifying her story for a “post ‘Time’s Up’ era.”

“Prior to 2020, I was completely unaware of Jeffrey Epstein. But once his heinous actions were brought to light, I was both shocked and appalled. This revelation fueled my determination to stay vigilant and continue fighting against such evils in our world.”

Following this, Kravitz emphasized that the incidents referenced do not pertain to a specific individual; rather, her film explores broader human experiences. In her own words, “It’s about people.”

Women are consistently encouraged to always sport a smile, regardless of the circumstances. We’re often pressured to overlook distressing, frightening, or traumatic experiences and continue acting as if everything is delightful. We’re expected to participate in this charade, according to Kravitz.

In her role from The Divergent Series, she shared that since she’s genuinely passionate about films, ensuring her directorial debut’s narrative is both truthful and engaging was crucial to her.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I yearned to create a film that resonated with my own desires, and I’m eager to delve into those uncomfortable moments. Let’s take a moment to linger here, for this is a fascinating exploration—one that demands our attention.

Humans are intricate, flawed, amusing, stunning, and ruthless. We all yearn for influence – in social circles, culture, finances, politics. The key issue is: what lengths will we go to acquire it? How does one navigate this game? This tale isn’t about empowerment; it’s about power itself, plain and simple.

The film titled “Blink Twice” is brought to you by Amazon MGM Studios, in collaboration with Free Association, This Is Important, and Bold Choice Production. At the helm as director is Zoe Kravitz, who has assembled an impressive cast including Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, Christian Slater, Simon Rex, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Kyle MacLachlan, Geena Davis, and Alia Shawkat.

As a dedicated follower, I’m thrilled to share that the movie I’m excited about will be gracing the silver screens of India, exclusively, starting August 23, 2022. And guess who’s responsible for its global distribution? None other than Warner Bros. Pictures!
