At Least One Arrest Made in Matthew Perry Death Investigation

As a long-time fan who has followed Matthew Perry‘s journey through the laughter and tears of Friends, it’s heartbreaking to witness his struggle with addiction that led to this tragic end. I remember his witty Chandler Bing character that brought joy to millions, but it saddens me to see how his personal battles overshadowed his comedic genius.

The inquiry regarding the demise of Matthew Perry has been completed, and it appears that prosecutors have made at least one arrest, suspecting them to be linked with the Friends actor’s fatal intake of ketamine, a potent dissociative anesthetic, as determined from his blood samples.

NBC News announced this morning that an individual from Southern California has been apprehended today, suspected of being linked to Perry’s unfortunate overdose incident. The Associated Press, TMZ, and ABC News are all reporting that a series of arrests took place during an early morning operation, according to their law enforcement sources.

The announcement of the charges is scheduled for a press conference later today, featuring the U.S. Attorney from Los Angeles and the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The investigation initiated in May involved detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. Postal Service. These investigators are reportedly following the actor’s acquisition of an illegal substance that has a long history of recreational use but has recently been found to be beneficial in treating depression.

On October 28, Perry was found deceased at his Pacific Palisades home, having unfortunately drowned in his hot tub swimming pool. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office reports that an excessive amount of ketamine led to cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression, which ultimately caused his death. The medical examiner noted that the level of ketamine found in Perry’s blood was similar to what might be used during general anesthesia. The Medical Examiner’s office listed the acute effects of ketamine as the primary cause of death, but also mentioned drowning, coronary artery disease, and the influence of buprenorphine, a drug used for managing opioid addiction, as additional contributing factors.

Following his passing, friends attested that Perry was undergoing treatment involving ketamine. Yet, it was reported by the Medical Examiner that his last therapy session with ketamine had taken place nearly two weeks before his death. No other substances were detected in Perry’s body, and no drug-related items were found within his residence, authorities stated.

In his book titled “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing“, Perry recounted his experience with ketamine treatment. “I frequently felt as if I were dying during that hour,” he remarked. “I thought to myself, this must be what happens when you pass away. Still, I persistently chose to endure this ordeal because it offered something unique, and anything unusual is beneficial.”

He stated, “Experiencing K feels similar to getting struck on the head by a massive joyful spade. However, the aftereffects were severe and overshadowed the pleasure of the spade. Ketamine didn’t suit my preferences.”

In his 2022 memoir, Perry candidly discussed his prolonged battle with alcohol and opioid addiction that spanned over decades. He vividly remembered consuming an astounding 55 Vicodin tablets each day, which coincided with his later years on the iconic NBC sitcom.

Based on the medical report following his demise, it was known that a psychiatrist and an anesthesiist serving as Perry’s primary care provider were among the medical professionals who treated him in October.
