Violent Night Director Tommy Wirkola Boards New Shark Thriller

As a seasoned fan of blood-soaked, adrenaline-fueled horror films, I eagerly anticipate the release of “Beneath the Storm” directed by Tommy Wirkola, whose previous works have left me gasping for air and craving more. With Phoebe Dynevor, Whitney Peak, and Djimon Hounsou leading the cast, this shark thriller promises to be a chilling ride that I simply cannot wait to embark on.

As someone who has been a fan of Tommy Wirkola’s work since his breakout hit “Dead Snow,” I’m always eager to see what he comes up with next. While I thoroughly enjoyed the festive chaos of “Violent Night” last year, I must admit that I was intrigued by the news of his new project, “Beneath the Storm.”

Under the title “Beneath the Storm,” the film will be distributed by Columbia Pictures and features Phoebe Dynevor (known for “Fair Play” and “Bridgerton”), Whitney Peak (“Hocus Pocus 2” and “Gossip Girl”), and Djimon Hounsou (“A Quiet Place: Day One” and “Rebel Moon”) in leading roles. Adam McKay and Kevin Messik will produce the movie, with Wirkola being particularly recognized for his directorial work on films such as “Violent Night,” “Dead Snow,” “What Happened to Monday,” and “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.” Wirkola’s latest animated feature-length film, “Spermageddon,” was a success at the 2024 Annecy Animation Festival.

A lot of people who love horror films are eagerly anticipating Dynevor starring in another suspenseful movie. Although she gained significant recognition for her role as Daphne in Netflix’s Bridgerton, she has also acted in films such as Fair Play, Bank of Dave, and The Colour Room. In 2024, Dynevor was nominated for a BAFTA Rising Star Award, and most recently, she landed the lead role in the Miramax spy thriller Inheritance, which will be directed by Neil Burger.

As a devoted fan, I must say that Peak’s fame is undeniably tied to her unique portrayals in spine-tingling teenage sagas like Disney+’s hit sequel “Hocus Pocus 2” and the suspenseful “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” on Netflix. Her latest endeavor, the pulse-pounding action thriller “Trap House,” promises to be just as captivating with her sharing the screen with stars like Dave Bautista, Jack Champion, Sophia Lillis, and Bobby Cannavale.

As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but acknowledge the indelible impact Djimon Hounsou has made on the thriller genre. His gripping portrayal in “A Quiet Place: Day One” left an unforgettable impression, and his work in Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon” films further solidified his standing as a formidable talent. To add to his impressive resume, Hounsou has even earned Oscar nominations for his captivating performances in “Blood Diamond” and “In America”.

As I eagerly await the unveiling of the intricate plot for “Beneath the Storm,” rumors suggest that it will center around a chilling tale of shark-induced terror, blending thrilling adventures and suspenseful moments. Interestingly, this movie is set to battle it out with “The Bad Guys 2” from Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation in theaters on August 1, 2025. Similarly themed, “The Bad Guys 2” offers a more lighthearted approach, focusing on an anthropomorphic shark and his comrades as they embark on a heartwarming journey in an animated feature film.

I’m really looking forward to the upcoming thriller from director Wirkola, joining the list of shark movies in production. Standouts among these include “High Tide” starring Lizzy Greene and “Dangerous Animals,” directed by Sean Byrne. For horror enthusiasts like myself, Wirkola’s shark film is especially enticing given his reputation for delivering films that are both brutally intense and emotionally resonant, brimming with pulse-pounding action.
