Meet actor who ran away from home, took up odd roles as he had just Rs 18 left and rose to massive fame after Mirzapur

Born into a tumultuous family environment that could have silenced many, he instead found his voice and made a name for himself in Bollywood. After making waves with his debut in Pink (2016), he went on to shine in various hit movies like Middle-Class Abbayi (2017), Gully Boy (2019), and Baaghi 3 (2020). A significant boost to his career came when the actor landed the role of the Tyagi brothers in the acclaimed series Mirzapur (2020–present), which has further cemented his status as a promising star.

Vijay Varma initially embarked on his acting journey as a theater artist in Hyderabad, later transitioning to Pune for professional acting education at FTII. Subsequently, he shifted base to Mumbai where he landed a role in the critically acclaimed short film Shor, which bagged the Best Short Film award at New York’s MIAAC festival.

In an engaging conversation with Film Companion, I, as Vijay, opened up about my past struggles. As the youngest child in my family, I admit I was pampered, or perhaps ‘spoilt’ is the right term. Over time, however, as I matured and developed my own unique perspectives, these didn’t align with those of my father. This discrepancy led me to seek solace away from home at a certain point in my life.

Varma stated, “He urged me to enter the business, yet I longed for anything but working with him. This is where our disagreement began, and he was firm in his beliefs while I was determined to assert mine. The tension persisted for years until I realized ‘I don’t believe this man has my best interests at heart’, at which point I left home.”

In an interview with Galatta Plus, Vijay recounted a time when his tight financial situation forced him to accept a role he wasn’t keen on. He explained that during a particularly difficult period, when he had only 18 rupees in his bank account, he received a call. The offer was for him to play a small reporter for a one-day shoot and they were willing to pay him 3000 rupees.

The Yaara actor admitted that he wouldn’t have taken the role if not for his financial troubles. While filming, because his heart wasn’t fully committed, he made many mistakes and was promptly dismissed from the set. “I had already finished Monsoon Shootout by then and had played a lead role,” Varma disclosed, “but I went through that ordeal, and on my way back, I cried and vowed to myself never to accept anything for money again.”

For several years now, Vijay has taken on some remarkable roles that have significantly boosted his career, such as Darlings, Lust Stories 2, Jaane Jaan, Murder Mubarak, Dahaad, Kaalkoot, and many others. These projects have solidified his position in the industry and it appears that all his past hardships have finally paid off.
