While it seemed like we were in for a quiet spell at the box office following the blockbuster success of Deadpool & Wolverine, it turns out that this summer is going to be anything but ordinary.
Glancing at the upcoming movie releases for 2024, there’s an abundance of promising films scheduled later this year that have caught my eye. However, it appeared as though they wouldn’t be gracing our cinema screens anytime soon. But what I thought was a quiet period on the big screen has proven otherwise. After the blockbuster over $1 billion success of Deadpool & Wolverine, the next few weeks seemed empty on the calendar, but it turns out there are surprises in store.
In actuality though, there are a slew of movies you should absolutely head to the theater for. Let’s talk them out.
Blink Twice
In Zoë Kravitz’s first foray into filmmaking, a story unfolds about Frida, a young woman, who journeys to an enigmatic island with a wealthy, unidentified man. As her friend Jess vanishes during their stay, Frida senses strange occurrences. This debut is impressively assured, and surprisingly enjoyable – I went in without any preconceived notions (either good or bad), but can confirm it’s an entertaining watch. Featuring standout performances from Channing Tatum, Geena Davis, Naomie Ackie, and Alia Shawkat, this film is definitely worth your time at the cinema. The Substance
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Demi Moore’s nude scenes in the body horror film “The Substance.” Until this week, it was uncertain what cinematic journey awaited us. However, with the release of its trailer, another fellow film lover shared his excitement so profound that he skipped to his car post-screening, labeling it as “slick,” “smart,” and “deranged.” Will it be a blockbuster hit or an awards contender? Time will tell, but it seems tailor-made for the connoisseurs of horror.
Alien: Romulus
As a dedicated gamer, I never thought I’d be this hyped for the seventh installment of a franchise that’s been around for ages. But after penning our review for Alien: Romulus, it’s clear that this film is turning heads and garnering positive feedback from other critics, making it a must-watch among Alien fans.
On August 16th, the comprehensive guide for the movie “Alien: Romulus” officially hits theaters, followed by “Blink Twice” on August 23rd. “The Substance” will be shown last on September 20th, and it’s not the only horror project that fans of the genre should be thrilled about this chilling season.
