Following Prime Video's My Lady Jane Cancellation, Here's What The Executive Producers Told Us About Their 'Hopes And Dreams' For Season 2

As a seasoned gamer and avid TV viewer who has seen more than my fair share of shows that have come and gone, I can honestly say that My Lady Jane left me both heartbroken and intrigued. The show’s unique blend of historical romance and fantasy was a refreshing change from the usual run-of-the-mill period dramas we often see on our screens.

In June of the 2024 TV lineup, “My Lady Jane” debuted exclusively for Amazon Prime subscribers. This historical romance series was filled with more fantasy elements than many might expect from just the trailers, taking viewers on an unexpected journey through a fictionalized Tudor England. Originating from the novel by Jodi Meadows, the show offered a lively adventure and concluded its first season in a way that strongly hinted at potential continuation for Season 2.

I regret to say, it won’t come to pass, and the termination of “My Lady Jane” following its first season brought to mind the aspirations of the executive producers towards a continuation, as they had shared with TopMob, beyond the closing credits of Season 1.

My Lady Jane Cancelled After One Season

Amazon Prime Video decided to end production on the show “My Lady Jane” about two months after its initial airing in June, as reported by Deadline. This move came because the series failed to secure a place among Nielsen’s Top 10 rankings for original streaming content. Although it generated some online conversation, that buzz didn’t necessarily result in enough viewers tuning in to watch the show regularly.

I can’t help but ponder if the public’s reaction towards the show might have been different had they known about the twist beforehand, given that it wasn’t just a steamy period romance as suggested by the trailers. In reality, the main storyline deviated significantly from the expected narrative – spoiler alert for those who haven’t watched – focusing on Ethians, beings with the power to transform into animals, and their struggle against the Verity ruling class. Moreover, Jane’s romantic interest was none other than a secret Ethian named Guildford, who had trouble suppressing his ability to turn into a horse.

Essentially, it turned out to be much stranger than anticipated from the advertisements, but those who watched it found themselves quite entertained. Going in without any prior knowledge myself, I was captivated by the twist and eagerly await another season. The finale concluded with a cliffhanger that hints at further developments, making it likely that Emily Bader and Edward Bluemel will reappear as Jane and Guildford respectively.

What The EPs Wanted Beyond Season 1

To sum it up, towards the end of Season 1’s finale, the narrator hinted that our tale has more chapters to come, as Mary remains queen, Bess becomes an Ethian, and hidden romances persist. However, contrary to a suspenseful cliffhanger, Mary and Guildford found a joyous resolution – they shared a tender kiss before deciding not to escape England but rather to struggle for reclaiming the throne from Mary.

Back in the summer, when I had the incredible opportunity to chat with the creators of “My Lady Jane” before its debut, I couldn’t help but ask about potential continuations featuring our beloved characters – Jane, Guildford, and their companions. During our conversation, Meredith Glynn, the executive producer and showrunner, generously provided some insight:

We have hopes and dreams. But we’re just excited for everyone to see Season 1.

Although viewership for “My Lady Jane” didn’t seem to be high enough for it to secure a second season or maintain its position among Prime Video’s top shows, the general sentiment I’ve observed among viewers is that it was an entertaining series. Gemma Burgess, who created and wrote “My Lady Jane,” as well as serving as an executive producer, expressed her thoughts on a potential Season 2:

We eagerly anticipate the continuation of Jane’s story. For now, we merely ask viewers to enjoy Season 1. Should they take a liking to it, more may follow.

Unfortunately, “we’ll see” didn’t lead to a renewal for “My Lady Jane”, despite Emily Bader securing another role that will maintain her prominence. Laurie MacDonald, who has produced films like “The Ring”, the upcoming “Gladiator II”, the “Men in Black” series, and “My Lady Jane”, expressed her thoughts on the potential continuation of the Prime Video series before its debut. When I enquired about why the book adaptation was more suitable for a TV show rather than a film, she elaborated:

It’s interesting. I think that it could have been a terrific movie too. It’s not a big, big book. It was a best seller, but not at the level that you need for a feature film to sort of rest on. I think in the old days, Jane would have been a brilliant Disney hero, but when the writer, Gemma Burgess, brought it to me, I was excited about the challenge of a series. I’d worked much more in features, and I do think it’s a story and a group of characters who can expand, with some luck. If it’s successful, I think we can go for a while. We’ve got Mary, we’ve got Elizabeth. There’s lots of great history to cover, and it’s such a fascinating period.

If another medium doesn’t step in to continue the story, it seems unlikely that fans will get to explore further the historical period depicted in ‘My Lady Jane’ or follow the characters’ narratives more deeply. Despite this, I believe the show remains engaging and worth revisiting. The season finale cliffhanger might have been a bit unsettling, but at least Jane and Guildford found their happy ending.

Should you be keen on watching My Lady Jane, even though it’s no longer airing, you can enjoy all eight episodes by subscribing to Amazon Prime Video and streaming them instantly.
