As a devoted admirer of Jennifer Lawrence, I must say that my affection for her transcends the critical acclaim or box office success of any given film she appears in. Her undeniable talent and unique charm have won over countless hearts, including mine, through a diverse range of roles. That being said, I find myself intrigued by the enigma that is Passengers – a movie that has sparked both hilarious feedback on streaming platforms and polarizing opinions among critics.
Often regarded as Jennifer Lawrence’s least impressive movie, “Passengers” is currently one of the most-watched films on Prime Video – and it’s generating quite a bit of amusing feedback from viewers on Letterboxd. Although many critics on the social platform have given it just one star, Rotten Tomatoes has a critic rating of 30% based on more than 200 reviews. The film also received a Metacritic score of 41 out of 100, based on the opinions of 48 critics.
2016 saw the arrival of the film “Passengers,” which was both directed and penned by Morten Tyldum (screenplay) and Jon Spaihts respectively. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt share the main roles in this production, with Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, and Andy Garcia also making significant contributions to the cast.
The story unfolds in a future where a spaceship carrying 5,000 colonists, all in hibernation, is traveling towards Planet Homestead II due to Earth’s deteriorating biosphere. To preserve humanity, this voyage spans an incredible 120 years. But, trouble arises only 3 decades into the journey when a collision with an asteroid damages the ship, leading to a fault that wakes up passenger Jim Preston (played by Pratt).
Overwhelmed by the fact he must spend the remainder of his days on the ship, Jim chooses to rouse a stunning woman named Aurora Lane (Lawrence), whom he intends as his companion. Instead of revealing the truth to her, he deceives her, claiming she’s been awakened due to a malfunction. Yet, it won’t be long before Aurora uncovers the genuine facts.
As a cinephile, I’d rephrase it like this: Initially finding ourselves at odds due to our emotional turmoil, Jim and I manage to transform the predicament into something beautiful, fostering a deep affection between us. Being both a scribe and a news gatherer, Aurora chronicles her journey onboard the Avalon, creating an enduring tale for the ship’s passengers to uncover once they regain consciousness.
Although generally unfavorable critic assessments, the film Passengers was still recognized with nominations for Best Production Design and Best Original Score at the 89th Academy Awards. Since then, Lawrence has expressed her remorse over accepting large-scale productions like Passengers and The Hunger Games.
In her conversation with the New York Times, Lawrence expressed that everything seemed to be a chain reaction, more of a response than an initiative. Furthermore, she mentioned that extravagant productions such as ‘Passengers’ left her feeling creatively stifled or constrained.
Passengers Is Still Getting Negative Reviews, Eight Years Later
