As a dedicated moviegoer who has witnessed Lewis Pullman’s meteoric rise in Hollywood, I must say that his transformation into the enigmatic Jordan in Skincare is nothing short of remarkable. Having seen him shine in recent hits like Lessons in Chemistry and Top Gun: Maverick, it was a delight to see him tackle such a distinctive character with aplomb.

In the freshly released mystery thriller titled “Skincare,” currently screening in cinemas, Lewis Pullman (from “Top Gun: Maverick”) delivers a humorous yet gripping performance. He portrays Jordan, an eccentric, ambitious individual reminiscent of an influencer, who strives to aid his popular beautician friend, Hope (played by Elizabeth Banks). The arrival of a competing salon next door to her business sets the stage for an intriguing plot. This role is particularly noteworthy and could be one of Pullman’s best performances yet – he drew inspiration from a well-known boy band pop singer for it. Interestingly, during the time when Pullman’s real-life father, Bill Pullman, was starring in prominent films like “Independence Day,” there was a rise in the popularity of boy bands, some of whom are still making waves today.

As a dedicated cinephile, I shared with MovieWeb my unique approach to embodying the character in “Skincare.” While I was immersed in New Mexico, filming for “Outer Range,” I embarked on numerous hikes and diligently sent videos to director Austin Peters. I was on a mission to discover the true voice of this character, and moreover, to see if his voice transformed when he morphed into an influencer-like persona. To aid my quest, I even modeled my preparation after a renowned boy-band star, hoping to capture the essence of this intriguing role.

Initially, I found myself desiring a resemblance to Justin Timberlake. However, during our session, I realized that I was overdoing it and he suggested toning it down a notch.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice hints of J.T.’s style in there, asserts Pullman. His voice has this captivating, smooth, almost alluring quality that I thought Jordan might find appealing. So, I attempted to mimic it, or at least incorporate some elements of it into my work. However, I may have overdone it a bit.

The ‘Meta Layers’ in Skincare

Viewers who have seen Lewis Pullman in recent movies like “Lessons in Chemistry” and “Top Gun: Maverick” are in for an exciting surprise as they witness the rising talent take on a unique character in “Skincare”. As he shared with us, it was indeed a refreshing shift, saying:

The story had numerous paths it might take, but what captivated me was the concept of a character who seems to wander aimlessly. It’s hard to discern truth from fiction in this case…

Pullman noted that there are aspects of the game he’s playing where he excels significantly, but there are other areas where he struggles. Additionally, he hinted at an entertaining outtake that they hope to share in the future.

“In the movie, there might have been some scenes omitted due to time constraints. However, these cuts allowed for a deeper understanding of Jordan’s background and origin. It was quite impactful… I understand why they were removed as the authenticity of those details remains uncertain.”
