As a long-time admirer of Sofía Vergara’s remarkable acting career and her captivating roles, I find myself eagerly anticipating any new projects she takes on. Having grown up watching Sofía bring Gloria Pritchett to life on Modern Family, it is truly heartening to see her continue to push boundaries and explore diverse characters such as Griselda Blanco in her latest Netflix miniseries.
Sofia Vergara expressed her desire to reprise her character Gloria Pritchett from “Modern Family” during a recent interview with Variety, where she also discussed her new Netflix miniseries “Griselda.” In the wide-ranging conversation, the Colombian-American actress looked back on her career, delved into her latest role, and fondly recalled her time working on “Modern Family.”
In the beloved TV show, Sofia Vergara portrayed the lively, humorous spouse of Jay Pritchett (Ed O’Neill) and mother to Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez) and Joe Pritchett (Jeremy Maguire). Lately, several actors have hinted at the possibility of resurrecting the series, four years after it concluded. Vergara has expressed enthusiasm about revisiting her character, stating when asked about a comeback:
I’d die to be on that set. It’d be so much fun. A TV movie maybe?
Vergara received four Emmy nominations for her role as Gloria. She’s currently unsure about returning to the Pritchett family storyline yet, but she’s hoping for a sequel or special soon. She often jests with Ed O’Neill that if they wait too long, he might not be able to participate due to unavailability.
“I often tease him by saying, ‘Ed, stay alive! We’d have to wait for a sequel if something happened to you, and since you’re the eldest among us, being dead isn’t an option!'”
Sofia Vergara’s Diverse Career
After wrapping up with “Modern Family,” Vergara has kept herself occupied with a variety of acting projects. She began serving as a judge on “America’s Got Talent” in 2020. In addition to this, she provided voiceovers for the films “Strays” and an unspecified “Despicable Me 4.” More recently, Vergara took on the role of Griselda Blanco in the Netflix original miniseries, “Griselda,” which is based on true events. This series chronicles Blanco’s rise to power as a Colombian crime boss who established one of the most lucrative cartels in history. Known as “the Godmother” of Miami’s drug empire, Blanco was a cunning, ambitious entrepreneur, a mother of four, and a relentless drug lord.
As a cinephile who’s spent 11 years playing the delightful and witty Gloria on Modern Family, stepping into the role of Griselda was a refreshing change, offering a new set of challenges I eagerly embraced. I knew that tackling this character would require more than just my comedic skills; it would demand a deeper emotional investment.
“Back then, my lines were easy. It wasn’t like monologues.”
The project held deep emotional significance for the actress due to her personal experiences and losses. In 1996, Vergara’s brother was tragically murdered by a Colombian cartel during a failed kidnapping attempt. After seeing a documentary about Griselda Blanco and Miami drug lords, Vergara became captivated by the complexity of the character. However, she found the project too risky to pursue. In 2012, Blanco was assassinated in Medellín. Years later, Vergara felt ready to revisit the story. She partnered with Eric Newman, the producer of Narcos, and the rest is history.
In the gritty TV series, Vergara delivered an admired performance that held its spot in Netflix’s Top 10 for six weeks straight. This impressive act earned her a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a miniseries at the 76th Emmy Awards, where she was alongside heavyweights like Naomi Watts, Brie Larson, Jodie Foster, and Juno Temple. Fans eagerly await Vergara’s upcoming project, whether it’s comedy or drama, while also hoping for updates on a possible new installment of “Modern Family.”
