Imtiaz Ali takes responsibility for Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aaryan starrer Love Aaj Kal's failure; 'The actor is not obliged to understand...'

As an ardent follower of Imtiaz Ali’s cinematic journey, I find myself deeply intrigued by his recent reflections on Love Aaj Kal’s underperformance at the box office. With a career spanning over two decades, he has consistently shown us the kaleidoscope of human emotions through his stories, and this sequel was no exception.

Imtiaz Ali recently discussed the low performance of the 2020 release “Love Aaj Kal,” starring Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan, which is a sequel to the 2009 film. Despite high expectations, the movie underperformed at the box office. Amar Singh Chamkila, who was involved with the production, suggested that perhaps he may not have effectively conveyed the film’s storyline to the actors.

During a chat with Midday, director Imtiaz Ali discussed the underperformance of his movie, Love Aaj Kal, featuring Sara Ali Khan and Kartik Aryan. In his explanation, he mentioned that the film held something deeply sensitive. He also reminisced about his past English lessons, as they seemed to resonate with him during the making of this film.

As an ardent admirer, let me recount a fascinating conversation I overheard: The filmmaker shared that his mentor often found her young students nodding in agreement, even when they didn’t quite grasp what she was teaching. He mused, “It seems the duo in the movie might not have fully grasped your message. I want to clarify I’m not casting aspersions on Sara and Kartik. Directing an actor is a collaborative process, yet it’s their prerogative not to fully comprehend since they’ve surrendered themselves. In retrospect, I realize I may not have effectively communicated my vision to the entire team.”

In a conversation with Hindustan Times recently, filmmaker Imtiaz confessed that his movies Jab Harry Met Sejal and Love Aaj Kal, which didn’t perform well, were made more out of passion than strategic planning. Although they faced some issues during production, he believes they could have been improved. He hopes the audience can find some value in these films as well, since there are aspects that might not have been immediately apparent.

As a lifestyle aficionado, let me share some intriguing insights about a captivating Bollywood saga. Back in 2009, the enchanting Love Aaj Kal graced our screens, featuring the charismatic Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Giselli Monteiro in pivotal roles. Fast-forward to 11 years later, the creators breathed new life into this timeless tale with a brand-new cast and narrative, offering us a fresh perspective on love in contemporary times.

In terms of his career as a director, Imtiaz’s latest project was the biographical drama “Amar Singh Chamkila,” featuring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra. This film was centered around the life of a renowned Punjabi singer, famed for his chart-topping hits. The production premiered on Netflix and garnered widespread acclaim from both critics and viewers.
