Despite losing the No. 1 spot to “Alien: Romulus” last week, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest blockbuster starring Deadpool and Wolverine, directed by Shawn Levy and featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, had a massive week. The superhero film surpassed Todd Phillips’ “Joker” ($1.078 billion) to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie worldwide with a total of $1.093 billion (as reported by Box Office Mojo).

In summary, “Alien: Romulus” took the top spot, followed closely by “Deadpool & Wolverine” at number two with a gross of $29 million. Meanwhile, Blake Lively’s romantic drama “It Ends with Us” held strong in third place, earning $24 million and maintaining a competitive edge against her husband Ryan Reynolds in the box office. Director and star Justin Baldoni can certainly be proud of this achievement.

Glen Powell’s movie, “Twisters,” is causing more chaos as it climbs to the fourth position at the box office, earning $9.8 million. Rounding out the top 5 is this weekend’s biggest cinematic surprise – screenings of Henry Selick’s animated film “Coraline” celebrating its 15th anniversary, which garnered an impressive $8.4 million.

2024 saw Nicolas Cage’s film “Longlegs” exceed $100 million in earnings, making it the highest-grossing independent movie of the year. Regrettably, for the first time since its July 12 release, it didn’t crack the Top 10 list. Meanwhile, IFC Films’ production “Skincare,” starring Elizabeth Banks and Nathan Fillion, opened outside the Top 10 with earnings of $315,894 from 768 cinemas. Lastly, Music Box Films’ film “Mountains” earned a modest sum of $6,119 in its limited release at a single cinema.

Come next weekend in August, three fresh films are set to enter the summer movie scene. These include “The Forge,” starring Channing Tatum, the intriguing “Blink Twice,” and Bill Skarsgård’s rendition of “The Crow.” All these movies will be released on Friday, 23rd August.
