As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I can’t help but express a tinge of nostalgic longing for the hypothetical team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine, featuring cameos from Ghost Rider and Daredevil. The idea of Ghost Rider’s fiery skull and Daredevil’s keen senses gracing our screens alongside these titans of merry mayhem would have been a spectacle to behold, especially if the likes of Nicolas Cage and Ben Affleck had donned their respective leather jackets once more.
In a hypothetical scenario, the infamous superheroes Ghost Rider and Daredevil, who have graced both the big and small screens, could potentially have made an appearance alongside Deadpool and Wolverine. Although the third Deadpool film featured numerous legacy cameos, it was impossible to utilize all of them due to constraints, leaving fans yearning for a more diverse ensemble of characters from previous Marvel movie adaptations.
Based on a post by Rodney Fuentebella (@rodneyimages) on Instagram, there were initial plans to feature Ghost Rider and Daredevil alongside Deadpool, Wolverine, and other superheroes in an upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Concept art suggesting this collaboration might simply be a hint of what could have been, but it does give us a glimpse into the number of cameos that were potentially included in the movie.
One of the key factors contributing to the success of Deadpool & Wolverine is the abundance of cameos featured within. Director Shawn Levy, alongside stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, spent considerable time building anticipation for these appearances. Most viewers were content with the cameos that made it to the final cut. Although Ghost Rider and Daredevil didn’t appear, their inclusion – particularly if Nicolas Cage played Ghost Rider and Ben Affleck portrayed Daredevil – would have added an extra layer of excitement for spectators. However, with many critics already finding the film to be on the brink of fan service, the introduction of these prominent Marvel characters might have further tipped the balance in a less favorable direction.
Ghost Rider and Daredevil Have Been Adapted Several Times
Initially, Ghost Rider was introduced through Nicolas Cage’s film in 2007 and its sequel from 2011 titled “Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance”. These films received negative reviews from critics, and their box office performance wasn’t impressive either. However, they managed to build a devoted fanbase largely because of Cage’s portrayal of the character. Later on, Ghost Rider was featured in the TV series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, played by Gabriel Luna. Despite ongoing rumors suggesting Keanu Reeves as a potential candidate for the role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), no official casting for a future Ghost Rider has been announced yet, making it more of a fervent fan wish rather than a concrete possibility.
In his sole attempt on screen, Daredevil’s thrilling exploits didn’t receive much acclaim. In 2003, the director Mark Steven Johnson guided Ben Affleck as Daredevil in the film “Ghost Rider”, but the reception was lukewarm and the box office response was fairly poor. An R-rated version of the film slightly improved the critical response, but only one sequel followed – a spin-off titled “Elektra”, where Jennifer Garner reprised her role in 2005, which unfortunately turned out to be a major flop at the box office.
In one of his past projects, Garner’s Elektra was among the established actors who featured in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and it would have been intriguing to witness her teaming up with Affleck’s Daredevil once more. Unfortunately, this didn’t materialize. However, enthusiasts can look forward to Charlie Cox reprising his role as Daredevil in the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again,” scheduled for release around 2025.
